Hi, my friend has a really mint fsh 2007 vw r32 with 39k on the clock, for a few days now the car has been idling ruff (revs pick in up and then going down) today the engine management light came on.

Being quite late he couldn't take it to a garage but a friend has a vagcom which threw up a code for the camshaft b adjuster. To say he's pissed off is an understatement, anyone know what that it could be?

Thanks in advance

He didn't keep the exact codes

If it was just the one code then it sounds like the camshaft variator (the device that actually provides the variable cam timing) is not operating. I have heard of them getting jammed from flakes of metal shed by the camshafts.

Might be worth asking over on www.r32oc.com

Maybe a few guys there who've had the same issue

It was just the one code, is this something that needs engine out to fix?

Thanks for the link but I don't think I can join another forum, probably can't post for a few days.

I'm pretty sure you'd be able to post straight away. Hopefu

Y your mate gets it fixed ASAP, it's not something I've ever heard of so I'm afraid I can't help.

As said get on the R32 forum as there is a fair bit of knowledge on there about chain issues.

Another bump for the evening crowd. Cannot believe a engine that is praised here so much would throw up a £2000 wobble @ 40k

Why cant you believe it? You would believe the HG going on a Rover, people just don't want to see any faults with VAG stuff, making the usual abused, poor maintenance, bad apple , friday car excuses for their many well documented faults.

Bad apple you say, looking at R32oc I can see a few bad apples, his car is totally beautiful, it's a shame because if it ever needed money spent on it has. Anyway thought only diesels can throw a 2k bill rolleyes

To be fair any car can turn up a nasty bill at any age and any mileage, they are designed and built by humans after all is said and done.

He took it to a mechanic and the guy told him something along the lines that the timing chain is loose and that there's another fault that is causing it, engine/gearbox has to come out. Maybe the mechanic was talking rubbish?

To ne honest camchain issues with the MK5 are very rare. Most issues tend to be with the MK4.
