So I'm facing a bill for my 1.7 puma for about a grand for welding and the abs is playing up. I've spotted a cheap cougar 2.5 v6 near me with 11 months mot and 70k on the clock.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are - why the obsession with ford cars named after big cats?

wouldn't call it a upgrade, the cougar was never rated as highly as your puma.

Puma and Cougar are the same (as in the big cats). Just different names depending on where you are.
2.5ltr engine in the cougar is not that fast or powerful. If you like the Puma, try find a similar one.

Most definitely not an upgrade, the Cougars are very poor.

Indeed but said women are named after the eponymous Cougar so my point still stands

If it's cheap enough (i.e. shed money) why not? It would be a least a change

Exactly. For a local garage (rather than dealer/specialist) at £30/hr that's a week of welding...

Sounds like more of a downgrade to me, you will use more fuel and have less fun driving it.

Do you do a lot of motorway miles?, might make sense if you do I suppose.

Not just welding; it's all the dismantling, reassembly and painting etc. that goes with it.

Its almost a year to the date that I bought a Cougar moving from a Mondeo thinking it was an 'upgrade'. It wasn't.

Yes it was a nice car, different, felt sporty etc, but it was sold within a month due to faults. Sold as spares or repairs.

Stick to a car or model that was produced for more that 5 years. Theres a reason they're not still being sold.

surely the lesson is not to buy rusty old Fords from the 90s.

A grand will buy you one, maybe two less rusty Pumas.

The cougar is more like a Mondeo, but if you fancy a V6 an ST24 or ST200 would be a better car for similar money.

I've had two 2.5 manual cougars they are fantastic cars and a real bargain,
I would never of got rid of my last one if I had hadn't been made redundant.
The funny thing is I actually went out to buy a puma before I got my first cougar but I couldn't find a rot free one for love or money.
I've yet to see a cougar with rot the build quality is fantastic not like the normal run of the meal ford stuff.

Also I found the engine on the 2.5 lovely and torquey so you don't have to keep changing gear every couple of seconds.
I could easily achieve over 30 to the gallon on the run.

The only thing check the wishbones as both of mine needed new ones which can only be supplied by ford as they are not the same as the mondeo's and are a couple of hundred pounds a set as there's no pattern parts available, both of mine had only done around 45 to 50000 so it's a weak part on the cougar.

Also take your time and find a 2.5 manual with low mileage and all the toys such as the quick clear screen and heated leather as the auto I hear is quite a bit more juicy to run.

The Puma is a car and a half.

The Cougar is half a car.

Don't. Just don't.
