Good luck and have fun, but PLEASE, whatever your buy: drive sensibly and make sure your car is track worthy (i.e. won't hit anyone else or drop fluids).
Thanks,

Oh yeah of course, we don't want to be all boy racery about it! And yeah we'll definitely check the car over, motorsport engineers in making over here Thanks,

Having done this my recommendation is to get the fastest rwd car you can afford. These days that would probably be a BMW 328i. Buy for 1K, spend money on fitting serious heavy duty brake pads, DOT5 fluid, new plugs, full oil change in engine, gearbox & diff. Fit good quality tyres if they are old or an obscure brand & buy a really good tyre pressure gauge.

Saloon is alleged to be stiffer owing to the lack of fold down seats (metal panel in place behind regular seats instead).

MR2 Mk2.
Under £1000 for the car, £500 to sort brakes/suspension and an oil change and perhaps a second set of wheels and tyres second hand.
