I realise that most manufacturers claimed MPG figures are almost impossible to achieve, but some are ridiculous. I have an Audi A1 tdi that the manufacturer claims will do 80+MPG yet I fail to get more than low 50's driving like a vicar and freewheeling down hills yet my parents have a Volvo S80 D5 auto thats supposed to do 42 yet has averaged 49 over 50,000 miles. Which Manufacturer tells the biggest Porkies when it comes to fuel consumption?

My dads S60 D5 has a rather optimistic trip computer...it regularly records 62 mpg. Working it out on paper though and it's actually doing 50-52 mpg.

Still very good, and a great car, but not quite as good as the computer would have you believe.

My Swift Sport's OBC thinks I'm getting 40.4 mpg. Calculated brim to brim, I'm actually getting 28.6 mpg. Suzuki claim 33 mpg urban. There's only 1000 miles on the clock so I'm hoping it improves with a few thousand more miles.

You are aware the mpg figures quoted by manufacturers are not the manufacturers figures aren't you?

My Dads old Caddillac I once got down to 7.1mpg AVERAGE on a 50 mile trip

Had Diesels up over the 60 mark easily, Girlfriends Golf is currently in the 63 range with the M62 50 limit!

The OBC in the A8 lies. Claims 38mpg and I calculate it at 31mpg.
The OBC in the Legacy also lies but in the other direction - shows 22mpg and is closer to 27.

Focus Mk1 1.6 (petrol) - the quoted figure is 41 iirc, I generally average 40-45, the highest I've had was 50mpg on a 60mph cruise to Wales and back, the lowest, 33.

Hah, RX8 R 3, long run 75-80 mph best I've seen 21 mpg, door to door 14-19 mpg, cheap to buy, FFS, deep pockets to run.

They're shockingly bad on fuel aren't they?

People claim that they get 20 mpg easily, but the best I've ever managed was the same as you: 21 mpg on a longish run. I was averaging 12-16 mpg in the 18 months I had it with 60% town driving and 40% duel carriageway/motorway miles.

I averaged 8.something mpg on a 150mile round trip in a V8 caddy. Ok it was around NYC but still, that thing gargled petrol and spat it down the drain as far as I could tell.

Foot to the floor the Monaro manages 3mpg. On a run manages about 27-28.

Average over a tank is a thoroughly acceptable 23 smile
