Well, the hard ride of the Honda and arriving in my late 30's has convinced me I should change cars, as all I seem to do these days is drive to/from the station and along a motorway from time to time. Only do about 6k miles a year, so MPG isn't too important.

So, ~£15k budget, and I think I've got it narrowed down to a M-B CLS500, a BMW 650 sport or a RRS supercharged. I'll end up driving them all and making my mind up, but which would you go for? I'm thinking quick and/or comfy automatics, not older than 2006 vintage. No need for four seats, but a nod to practicality might be nice as I'll end up keeping this for a few years if my last two cars are anything to go by! If there's something else that should be on the list, I'd also like to know!

A CLS500/55 would be my pick from those three smile

CLS but make sure it's had a lot of option boxes ticked, things like Comand, heated leather, parking sensors etc.

Another vote for the CLS here, the pre facelift RRS doesn't drive as nice as the later ones so I wouldn't consider one at that vintage

ETA: Didn't realise you could pick up a 55 for that money even it is a bit older than you want

Love the colour on this one

Have you also considered an E60 M5, I believe they can be had for under 15k but I think they might all be early 2005 models

Out of those the CLS too. But if you could stretch a little further. .. the newer shape CL cars are very nice indeed.

I'd go for a Citroen C6. There seems to be quite a few on autotrader http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/citro...

I'd definitely test drive an RRS before you decide. Totally different driving experience. Great perch and view out. Not designed to drive fast, more to waft along.

Interesting - lots of votes for the CLS, which was the least favourite on the list in my mind... I'd better try one! They do seem to be the best value of the three on Autotrader...

Not sure I fancy an M5 or C6 - trying to avoid proper saloon cars if I can, they just feel a little too grown up for some reason!

Merc. Although our RRS was a fantastic car and actually very much at home in the twisties despite its size, it's ride wasn't all that plush. The E63 that replaced it rides like a magic carpet in comparison.

The Sport did hide its weight extremely well though.

Bloody hell, I paid £63k for my new CLS 500 when they were first released. Lovely place to sit but for such a big car it made no sense you could only carry 4 people.

Another vote for the CLS here. To me it feels the most "special" out of the three cars you mentioned.

Can you get a Maserati Quattroporte for that money? Worth considering?

Why must it be post 2006?

I am rather tempted by a RRS Supercharged at some point but it absolutely would have to be completely stock for me (no white ones, no silly wheels etc.)

I do have another suggestion which does not fit in the age category. However, it will be very comfortable, depreciation free and looks beautiful compared to anything modern you see on our roads today. Oh and your budget buys a concours example:

I'd vote CLS too, but stick with the 500 over a 55/63 AMG unless you have deep pockets for consumables like the brakes...

I'd take the CLS in a heartbeat over the other two.

Go for a CLS 320CDI with the AMG Kit, lovely cars, I had one black with cream and added the little AMG lip spoiler, looked identical to this only RHD:

Actually I didn't see you were looking at the REALLY big gass guzzlers. In that case CLS55 AMG.

Few other big gas guzzlers I'd suggest:
  • BMW M5 V10
  • BMW 545/550
  • Audi RS4
  • Audi S6 V10
  • Audi RS6 V8
  • Audi A8 W12
  • Push the budget and get the S65 on Ebay for £17,800 bounce
