What do you consider as such and what were yours?
I'm thinking of buying an SL55 AMG and I'm excited to step into 500BHP, big repair bills club smile
Previous one was buying a Corvette, my first ever classic and first ever american car.
Buying a Z3-M was another one - my first true sports car and first M.

My first significant step was my second car. I moved from a Punto 1.2 to a Mg Zr 160, it was a revelation in the way that I finally found out for myself there is a very big difference in a 1.2 stbox and something with a bit of poke. Despite what practically everybody else had told me previously (the opposite)

The next significant step was moving from my 1.1 106 to a BMW 123d, value wise the BMW was worth 42 times what I sold the Peugeot for hehe Saying that, I've seen the light. And as such a fantastic car the BMW is, its not for me yes

Next significant step should hopefully coming soon in the form of something with ~400hp lick

300zx twin turbo with 500hp to a VX220 with 174hp

It was then that I realised that weight is very, very important in how fast a car can make progress

First car - 1987 VW Polo 1.0c - 44bhp, no power anything (not even vacuum assisted brakes!). Significant because it wasn't a motorbike

First "fast" car - Honda CRX VTi - 1000kg and 160bhp will do nicely! And it was in a horrible acid green. Fantastic car. Only sold it to fund my 2stroke karting habit.

First "proper petrolhead" car - Mazda RX8 231 - front engine, rear wheel drive, proper LSD, 230bhp@8,200rpm, 6 speed gearbox, likely to blow up at any moment. I love it!

First -> second car : Fiat Brava 1.6 to Jaguar XJ8 LWB. With this step I finally understood why people get so passionate about cars...

BMW 318 Sport compact to an Elise S1.

Sporty hatchback based on a shopping car to one of the purest sportscars you can get.

Sounds very tame, but for me a Mk1 Focus after an AX and a 106 was probably my biggest step. It felt like such a premium car to me and is still the best handling everyday hatchback I've driven.

Mine have been more iterative steps:

VW Polo 1.0 -> BMW Mini One -> Integra Type R DC2 -> Clio 172 Cup (due to running costs of the ITR) -> BMW Z4 Coupe 3.0 -> BMW Z4M

I went from a 1985 1.4 Volvo 340 to a 1997 1.5D 106.

Next step was after a few bangers and I went from a 1993 1.1 106 with nowt to a 2006 1.5 Swift which I swapped for my next 2 steps a 1967 Landrover a 1999 MX-5 and later a 1968 Volvo Amazon.

There have been several cars but the 340, 1st 106, Swift, Landie, 1st MX-5 and the Amazon were my 'steps'.

Well mine goes up quite gradually till the last one I think.

VW Golf MkII 1.6
Porsche 944 2.5 Lux
Vectra 2.5 V6 (London Banger)
BMW E36 M3 Evo
TVR Tuscan 4.0 2000

The Tuscan is a bit of a beast and I know it couuld bite me hard when not treating it with respect which I didn't feel in the M3 or the others.

I did have some mega stuff out of ClubGT though which were big steps. Audi R8, Nissan GTR, F355, F430, F550, Lambo Gallardo etc esp as I only had them for a weekend but it was still great fun playing with them without taking it too close to the edge ( as I didn't know them that well )

TVR Tuscan is definitely the scariest one out of those to push hard I would say. I do need my rear shocks doing so perhaps that and some geo work will calm her down a little bit.

Two for me I reckon...

1st car - 20 year old Talbot Horizon, to a 3 year old Cav GSi (which had yet to become chav at the time!). Massive step for me and something I worked towards for a very long time.

Second would probably be realising that the M3 I had, had running costs comparable to my dream car - a Maserati GranSport - and then eventually taking the plunge 2-3 years later and buying said GranSport.

Looking back, I'd say from a Ford Escort to an MR2 was my first big jump, but the biggest was MR2 to Boxster, both in terms of running costs and initial outlay. At the time I did wonder for the first few months if I'd overstepped my place in society!

No major jumps really from there, aside from initial cost.

I went from a 2CV to an AX GT - 50bhp/ton to 120bhp/ton, and 21 seconds off the 0-60 time.

Then some nice little iterative steps leading from CRXs to Elise via MR2s.

When i grew out of the silly "fast diesel" phase i had in my late 20s/early 30s, and started buying proper cars again.

Mondeo 1.8LX to TVR Chimaera 4.0.

Chimaera 4.0 -> R32 Skyline GTR with over 600bhp and a huge turbo... not so much the performance (although it was noticeably quicker) but the way the power was delivered was completely different so took a bit of practice to avoid being left behind at the lights by grannies in their Micra 1.0s.

CLK55 AMG -> Golf 1.8 hehe Got fed up of wasting money on cars and wanted to invest more in me. *hands PH badge in*
