I'm tired and dissilusioned. I have money but I'm bored. I need a sensible but fun Petrolheady hobby/investment type thingy for 2013....

Then look up Nathan Millard's Sydney to London trip (he also wrote an excellent book).

Choice of bike is tricky - I recommend you get a lightweight single.
Also look up Austin Vince's stuff.
You could also do China, fly in, buy a bike and tour.
