Why so slow, what has changed?
Discussion
I know there have been similar threads but I really am surprised by how slow a large amount of traffic is now and just don't understand why.
For the daily commute I tend to avoid the A roads around me as even thought the majority are 50/60 single lane roads the general traffic speed tends to sit around 35-40mph. I now try and use the B roads but over the last few months I'm regularly stuck in a queue of traffic doing 25-30mph, which is of course nose to tail to reduce any overtaking opportunities!
I seem to remember the majority of traffic travelling at near the speed limit and only on very rare occasions seeing cars doing 50% of the limit.
So why the slow down? Do people think they're saving money, do think it's too dangerous to even approach the limit?
Surely the last majority of drivers on the roads today were driving 2/3/4 years ago, so why have they slowed down?
When will this slow down stop or will we just grind to a halt? Is there a greater variation in speeds on the roads now and does this actually increase risk of accidents? Does it effect the economy? Will the government have to run campaigns stating that "going slow kills" and put minimum speed limits before the road network just ceases to work?
Thoughts?

To raid from the traffic reporter's repertoire; "sheer weight of traffic".
More cars on the roads now than ever before.
I thought that the stats show numbers of cars on the roads have gone down over the last 2 years?More cars on the roads now than ever before.

Combination of bad driving, bad road surfaces and the cost of fuel I'd imagine.
Why the bad driving though, why is there more recently? Has the driving test changed?Do people really drive that much slower to try and save petrol? do they believe it works?
Far too many scareycats on the road as there used to be and I agree with you OP.
I've notice there are people who don't like driving when it's dark they seem to be on the brakes a lot when oncoming traffic approaches.
I often find in a 40 they will only do a frustrating 25 and brake on every single curve of the road.

These days the masses don't concentrate on their driving: they all just pull out of their driveways, catch up with the next vehicle and then follow it closely like a lemming. The nearest they come to overtaking is when the car in front eventually pulls over and stops. It's dreadful really. When I started driving I had 39bhp at my disposal: that never stopped me overtaking a dawdler and I never caused any accidents.
