Budget £11,000 max

Requirements:-

Reliable - would prefer Japanese
Practical - hatch or estate preferred
Less than 4 years old and under 40,000 miles
35 mpg minimum

And by Sat at the latest - having been disappointed with a car purchased through a main dealer 6 weeks ago they are buying the car back for what I bought it for but insist that they have it back by Sunday.

Thanks in anticipation.

Do you know, I don't understand this venom towards What Car threads. Perhaps if you don't like what car threads, you shouldn't open them. tongue outwink

Does enjoyment come into it at all?

What do you need to carry in your estate? Dogs? A little stuff? Something of a specific size, like golf clubs?

(Sorry, but they might help narrow it down.)

But you'll have to filter out what you consider to be Japanese or not.

A nice DC5 Teg? Will just about manage 35mpg if you don't go mad or buy a low-geared JDM.

I like What car threads, but often it does seem the poster actually doesn't want ideas, isn't buying at all and in any case doesn't really offer enough info on what they really want. So they end up with a long list of cars, of which looking in the back of Autocar could achieve.

When buying you need to define what you want first, i.e. to do what and why. Then add in constraints like price, age or mileage. Else you end up with far too many options and will likely get something humdrum.

Toyota Avensis Estate - Toyota main dealer (to assure quality) - 2.0 petrol will easily give MPG and be bulletproof

Two growing boys with rugby kit etc dictate the need for practicality. Wife has a full size SUV, but I also do one half of the school run.

Not too fussed about enjoyment, I have a Caterham for weekends.

Have seen a two year old WRX in budget but the tax and real world MPG (I suspect) will make it expensive.

OK, so looking for a car-as-35+mpg-load-carrying-tool, an Avensis will do it. So will most Mondignia class cars of most nationalities, though I accept you asked for a Japanese one. A Skoda Octavia's got a huge boot in hatch or estate form and a slightly smaller footprint than Mondignias if you want something more compact. They're not built like the best of Japanese but they're pretty solid things.

There are myriad Korean/Japanese carrying options in the Focus class that to recommend a single one would be difficult, but I suspect you'd get a basic one for much less than your 11k.

MPV's might do. If you fancy something oddball but still Jap... A Mazda 5 or a Honda FRV, perhaps?

Lexus IS 220d 177bhp, pretty cheap second hand, should be able to get one on a 59plate with less than 30k
