On my way to work this morning, the slip road to get onto the M4 today was quite busy and there were lots of cars queuing in the left lane.

As there was nothing in the right lane I used that to pass most of the traffic and get onto the motorway.

I don't think some of the other drivers were impressed by my manoeuvre and a Volvo honked at me for (what I can only assume) 'pushing in'.

So, is it acceptable to use the right lane or should I have joined the back of the queue in the left lane?

Can't see anything wrong with that.

What else is that lane for?

I don't fall out with that. Two lanes there to be used, safer than stationary queuing onto the M-Way.

If you'd have been listening to Limp Bizkit however, or those Vengaboys, I might have had some stern words to say, sonny!

I'm not seeing anything wrong here other than a queue of sheep being sheep that I would shake my head at as I overtake them all legally and correctly in the same manner you did.

It's like this on the A3 slip road to the Burpham junction, two lanes and everyone stays in the left lane, sometimes it's queuing right back onto the carriageway, I just breeze by and slot in at the roundabout at the end.

If the highways agency design gurus wanted people to merge a quarter mile earlier, they would have ended the outside lane a quarter mile earlier.

You are SUPPOSED to merge at the end in heavy traffic.

It ain't difficult to work out.

Another vote for nothing wrong with that at all.

Extra points for the nice noise when you put your foot down.

What is wrong with that? I love it when lanes are left empty for me for 2-300 yards...

Where are the idiots tonight, telling you how wrong you are? Is PH broken?

Maybe repost in SP&L, see how that goes.

Interesting that there arnt two lanes actually joining the main road, it does on the slip onto the M74, looks could be a bit dicey at the actual point of joining the carriageway, but as others have said, there are two lanes, use them

Thought I recognised it.

Yeah no problem with that, it's not as if you were rocketing down there at stupid speed or doing anything aggressive. I'd agree it was safer for both lanes to be used than have the queue extending further back too.

Nowt wrong there mate, I'd have done the same.

Slightly different but I was in traffic on my way home today, timed bus lane ends at 7pm. It's 6.55pm and I'm obeying the rules so I wait, and wait, and wait until I hear the pips on the radio telling me it's 7pm. Pull out into the bus lane and pass 30-40 cars. People are sheep and do not read or understand lanes/signs. It's all to our advantage.

I always do things like that. People seem to hate it. Same when road works are about and it goes from two to one lane, people start turning into the other lane really early, were you can go for another 200/300 metres before needing to.

Good to see that everyone is in agreement that this is perfectly acceptable, as mentioned before the only potentially dodgy bit is where the two lanes merge into one as they join the motorway.

As someone said earlier this is indeed J27, surely one of the most badly designed slip roads in the country -can be difficult to get up to speed when the M4 is free flowing.

I'll just continue doing it and ignore the horns/dirty looks smile
