What the hell is happening with 205 GTI prices? About a year ago you would see half a dozen in autotrader for a grand of less, today the cheapest one on Autotrader is £3750 and there are only a handful up for sale..

Has its moment finally arrived? As someone who has held on to one for 10 years hoping the value would eventually go up, here's hoping they are at last becoming collectable.

Yup.

Plenty of 40 somethings who lusted after one when at school can now afford one.

Chances are they'll come back on the market in spring - now isn't the time to be flogging a piece of classic french. There's always tatty ones down the bottom end to pick up, but the good ones are starting to firm up in values now.

Autocar did an article in yesterday's mag tipping the 1.9 205 Gti for future stardom and rising values ( along with the 968 Sport ( Club Sport has already left the station ) Alfa SZ, 3-door Sierra Cosworth, Esprit GT3 and DC2 ITR )

4k miles per year is pretty low, but I wouldn't make a huge feature of it. That car has obviously had a nut-and-bolt refresh throughout, the paint looks perfect. If I were looking for a 205 as an investment/permanent keeper I'd give serious thought to that one.

This is what they are advertised for, not what they sell for, despite the eulogising they are still a cheaply built, rattly, not that fast and very old french hatchback, prices are rising because they were, and are an icon but five grand seems a bit rich and will test the avergage forty somethings nostalgia as that is the jumping off point at which a 205 seems like a worse deal than that Boxster or all manner of much faster and still quite decent stuff. Cheaper ones are still out there, there is still quite a lot of them as well.

Four Star classics will ineviatably have a very tidy one for 30k by the end of the year.

When I was looking for my first car, hoping to pick up a 1.6 Gti or an XS, they were everywhere, and you could get a decent one for under £1k, they've all vanished almost overnight, replaced by Gti-6 conversions and £5k show queens.

I did some work for a lad on here, Andy, who had a 50 thousand mile 1.6 GTi.

I believe he has garaged it up and still has it. It was absolutely spot on.

I doubt they'll go north of £10k in reality but from what was a very cheap car, buying one and restoring it might just about be commercially viable for a 5 year project.

I think finding ones tha need a bit of tidying is viable, but full on rebuilds cost a fortune, Wheeler Dealers did one and it didnt need that much, but it looked a whole lot better when done, suspect a couple of decades of Max Power type modifications may be reversed on some cars as people perhaps realise Peugeot got it spot on, have a big thing for white ones, none of your Miami Blue nonesense, too modern.

And a Dimma one, used to be one round our way in metallic red with massive versions of the standard wheels, leather retrim and a turbo, turned more heads than exotica, the only body kit worth keeping on a 205, even if it is a bit lairy.

5 years ago i had a 40k 1.9 Gti i bought for £700, £50 bucks on an MOT and it was good to go................................ i smashed it into a bridge. DOH!

I have been on the lookout for one to buy an an investment/mess around car just for a laugh that is exaclty like my old one, except the mileage.

I reckon in spring they will come back down again, and ill pick up one for around 1k.

What's going on with the headlight and indicator alignment on that?

You need to ignore what the usual companies and odd chancer are advertising them for, because those prices for the most part are neither realistic nor representative.

There's thousands of cars still out there and you can still pick up a good car for £1500 or less quite easily. There's also a lot of overpriced rubbish, so choose carefully.

Or just like the idea of revisiting a time when we were footloose and care free.
Or just like the idea of revisiting a time when you only needed c100bhp.....which still made the car a handful.

Ten grand for a 205 GTI, this was three times the price in the same era and went for £2500

I can only think nostalgia causes this, have had both and the 944 is better in every way.
