Im looking to replace our '97 Volvo V70TDI even though it keeps chugging along (255k miles and going), with something newer, as economical (mid 40s mpg), estate and that can tow 1800kg+.

Id love to get a 4x4, but wouldnt be able to live with the lack of economy.

A V70 D5 163bhp is an obvious choice, but what else is out there for £3k ish?

E39 BMW 530d
C5 Audi A6 2.5td v6
Saab 9-5 3.0 v6
Ford Mondeo diesel of some sort

Opinions of reliability and economy for the cars above would be great. anyone think of anything else that I've missed?

Been told to avoid the Audi and Saab due to engine problems, so those are off the list and the BMW will cost more to maintain and isn't as economical as the D5.

So that leaves the v70 d5 and the Mondeo, the Volvo wins hands down.

Are there any other estates that would suit my needs better than a V70 D5 would?

Is that Saab 3.0 v6 a petrol? If so, I nominate a Legacy.

Petrol.....ahhhhhhhhhhh....I come to love it more every day.

Yes you should avoid the 2.5td in the Audi. The 1.9Tdi is far superior with better mpg and reliability and only slightly less power.

bks, my E39 is on 191k miles now, we have put 30k on it in a year or so, take into account the mileage and what needs doing at that age/mileage it owes us
2 sets of tyres
2 rear arms
2 sets of pads on the front £40 from BMW themselves with sensor
Radiator
Thermostat
Water Pump
Thermostat housing
(above 3 were done because I was there at the time and it made sense)
Radiator hose
General servicing costs, I just did a massive service plugs, fluids, filters etc came to less than £200.

So £900 car, has cost me around £900 with all of the above, possibly less, really it has been faultless and the car is frankly amazing, it just completed around 1500 miles to the Alps and back

Also BMW are reasonable on parts prices as the E39 is now part of the value line, actually I have only ever had one part price from BMW that shocked me (set of brake pads for a 34 with sensor coming in at well over £100)

For me it would have to be the E39, it is a reliable old slipper, nothing beats a hard day at work when you feel like st and battered wanting to go home and you just get into the 39 and sit there for 5 minutes, and you get the silky smooth six

Thanks for the info on the E39, definitely food for thought.

As with any car though, find a good one and it will treat you right, important to check that it doesn't shimmy at about 50-60mph (needs lower arms 3 different ones and a gamble on which are broken)
Check air suspension works on the rear
Check the key for wear (give you the spins but fairly cheap for BMW to fix)
Most important is to check the coolant system has been refreshed, 100k miles and it needs refreshing.

Take those into consideration and you can get a fantastic car, I would struggle to replace our E39 with something different, the great thing about the E39 is you're forever finding things it does.
Adjusts volume with speed
Rain sensitive wipers
Rear wipe normally goes right, pause, left, pause, right and a decent pause so it is never working over time, put it in reverse it switches to a faster wipe.
Owned it for 30k miles now 2 years or so, and just the other day found out there was a button under the rear wiper arm that pops the glass open as opposed to holding the button above number plate to pop the glass open.

Again I would struggle to replace it, if it died it would be replaced with another E39.

Mondeo ST TDCI are really good cars. Our was utterly reliable in 4 years of ownership.
Not the best MPG, 50 if you have a very light foot. Normally nearer 40 but never lower than 35 even with a lead foot.

Want something newer, more refined and with less mileage that can also tow a little more weight.

OP, you know the answer really, don't you - you're just fighting against being labelled as the guy who always drives Volvos wink

The only thing I could maybe add is an LPG'd petrol, but tbh I'm not sure why you'd bother.
