Is the vehicle you're buying brand new?

If it's a decent garage, they will arrrnage it all for you.

If not, put your plate on a retention certificate, then transfer when you get the new car

We have just done this, Mini Dealers wouldn't swap the plate for us, as it was "too near" Christmas (part-ex was completed on 12th December), so they organised the retention certificate for us. The new car's and the old car's V5 came back to us, and just today we returned the old car's V5 to the dealer (thye kept a £500 deposit to ensure we did!)

Yes indeedy and the MOT and tax disc serial numbers.

If you have a local DVLA office, take the paperwork in to them to check it and submit it.

I've just done this recently and it took just 3 days to get the paperwork back and just over a week to get the new V5.
