It's not much of a prize though is it, an Auris for a week....
Would have been nicer to do up the old car for them, or give them a auris, or at least a week in the gt86.

My stepfather had a customer who turned up with one of these, massively overheating and barely running on a couple of cylinders - it had ditched all it's coolant so he drove it the 5 miles to the garage anyway. The bloke sold it to him for next to nothing and went on his way.
It sat there for a bit until finally they replaced the hose that burst, topped it up and it ran perfectly. It had some underlying cooling problem because it'd overheat very badly sometimes but we all used it as a runaround like that for years, cooking the hell out of it at least once a month and it just WOULD NOT die. The abuse it had was appalling, but year after year it just kept going. In the end he gave it away to someone who just had a baby and was skint and desperate, last I knew he was still tooling around in it.
Drab and boring as it was, for me it represents Toyota at their peak of excellent engineering and genuine quality rather than perceived quality.

My dad had a K reg hatchback back in the days. I quite fancy the idea of owning one, id love a GTi. plus they are better lookers in saloon form.
theres a K Reg one for sale round my way for either 295 or 395! with tax and test.
Back then Toyotas were like sewing machines that ran forever!

I remember about 10 years ago my parents had one, a 1.6. Never used to get so much as a dipstick check. Anyway one day Mum came home on foot from work and said that the car had conked out up the road... it started cutting out, then she noticed the temperature was up to max, but she just kept on going - I guess she really wanted to get out of Wigan. Finally near home with 'a lot' of smoke coming out the back it stopped and would not restart.
So she described what happened and I thought OK, that's f
ked now, off I trudged to get it after tea and behold if the thing didn't just fire straight up. Needed a new radiator but good as gold beyond that, they had it for another couple of years.
Good cars!!

I bought one for our mechanics as a call out car to throw a pile of tools in etc....we got it 3 years ago with 80k and now on 192k and it's been so reliable it's been silly. (1.8 turbo d). meanwhile all the other much much newer passats and mondeos continue to need warranty and non warranty work. Spent £500 last week alone on the front suspension of a 130 passat.
Makes you wonder where the advances have been.
