Looking for suggestions for a double din Sat Nav? The main reason I am looking a double din is
1) I would ideally like a reversing camera
2) Don't like flip screens

It ideally would need to play an Ipod (whether that be through AUX or USB or an ipod cable) and have a decent Sat Nav. The car could be spec'd (in later years) with a Kenwood unit so that's the one I'm leaning toward but don't know much about them.

What would the approx cost to fit one be ? Can a reversing camera by wired into it, if so how much would that cost? Will any camera work or would it need to be the same manufacturer as the head unit?

Thanks in advance.

I thought it might be a murcie lol

Mine has a DNX7200 kenwood head unit which has everything on it ready to go including a Garmin Sat Nav wich came with it. I have since added blu-tooth with cost £70 from ebay (Kenwood KCA-BT300), full ipod which was £12 from ebay (Kenwood KCA-iP300v), both fitted by a great autoelectricion for not a lot of money, and finally the garage just fitted a simple reversing camera for £130 from ebay(Kenwood CMOS-210). All basically plug and play. Really simple to fit too if you have the knowledge so to speak.

As my head unit is from 2007/8 is will not download my address book from my i-phone where a later head unit might/should be able to. The ipod does not do cover flow, but is fully intergrated apart from that. The camera is very tiny indeed and is the basic one so just shows a pic when "R" is selected. The other camera I thought about was the CMOS-310 which has a lot more function with beeps, grid lines, and ajustable camera angles etc, but decided this was far to much to contend with when reversing what is already a difficult car to reverse. So as the mirrors are big enough to see down the sides, and vision out the back window is fine, all I wanted was to see what was directly behind the car itself if you get my point.

If you are thinking of just updating a pre lp-640 system I would forget that....if you are going to buy all new stuff and start from the beginning then the latest Kenwood offerings would be good,.....but I would go Alpine without hesitation. Whatever make you go for, use their accessories as then there won't be any compatability issues.

If you are looking to fit one into a pre lp-640 I think you will need to get the latter surround plate from Lambo I think to enable it to fit, but don't know the cost.

Good luck & hope this helps.

Have you got the car yet?

Firstly thank you very much what has been an incredibly helpful and thorough response! It’s a 6.2 Murcielago and I just want to “update” the interior and also have the reversing camera (bluetooth & Ipod would also be good). I like the idea of the Kenwood system purely because it’s “stock” on later cars and I’m a bit anal about these sorts of things however I’m not ruling out other brands. I’ve heard good things about the Sony system. Do you know anything about it? Alpine looks good, the only things was I heard it can be slow to boot up?

Lastly can you just use any reversing camera or does it have to be by the same manufacturer as the head unit? The reason I ask is that the Kenwood one seems expensive for what if offers. There seems to be better quality ones cheaper?

Thanks again for your help its VERY much appreciated!!!

First of all, congratulations on buying a cracking car, Well done and enjoy it. You are right to update the system IMHO....just bin the old Becker unit lol

Right, from what you have said about keeping things original I would definately use Kenwood. Any Kenwood 2din unit will work, you just need to buy one with the spec you need/want already built in to make things easy which will include the Sat Nav, blu tooth & full Ipod. As you are starting afresh, you could include TV, DAB, DVD etc...personal choice. The only extra you will need to buy is the reverse camera to plug in as the head unit will have the software in it already. Any decent car audio place should be able to help you with the whole purchase (NOT Halfords I would suggest!) and ask for discount. I don't know anything about the Sony, but TBH stick with the Kenwood, you won't regret it.

As far as cameras go....yes, any universal camera should work but they tend to be rather large in appearance as a friend of mine can vouch for (Gatso size he calls it), and more complicated to wire in. wink Personally I would use the Kenwood ones as I said above as they really do plug straight in and the image is one of the best the garage & I has ever seen (even comparing it to the likes of Audi, Jag, Bently standard fit cameras etc). The CMOS-210 I thought was cheep at £135, but the all singing/dancing CMOS-310 was only £170 off the net.

Don't forget the dash plate. As I said I don't know how much they cost, but mine is attached to the A/C unit as one whole piece of carbon fibre trim, yours may be seporate and in leather I don't know. I would get a price on that before you go any further so you don't have a nasty shock.

Good luck with your choise and keep us updated with progress.

Cheers,

Pete

I had a Kenwood DNX520VBT installed in my VW Golf MkV R32 and loved it. You can see a load of photos and details on here (under SwissJonese):-

I have Kenwood DNX7240BT. I does everything you want. Mine was around £1000 fitted two or three years ago. I've updated the Garmin satnav (excellent btw) a couple of times. You have to download a free firmware upgrade and buy the dvd but easy enough.

I have one of these: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/GPS-Nav...

Other than the long boot up time (about 20-30 seconds before you get any music) it's excellent. Full media control of the ipod, decent satnav, hands-free etc etc. Supports reversing cameras through a video-in, so you're not tied to specific models. I imagine the budget is rather higher than mine, too - so a modern equivalent of this/similar would probably be a decent shot.
