Help me Pistonheads! I own a Boxster S and the engine recently blew up. It will be getting fixed over the next few months however in the meantime I have £4,000 to buy a runaround. The only criteria is that it must be reliable. It will be used for a 5 mile commute so I am not too worried about MPG. Practicality is somewhat an issue as it should be a bit more practical than the Boxster. Currently I am swaying towards a 2004 Clk 320 with Amg kit or an Alfa GT.

I would appreciate any other suggestions smile

5 mile commute?

This should do the trick. Fair bit cheaper to run than a CLK too.

Honestly, if I was doing such a short commute, I'd get something small and pokey like a Clio 172/182 that still has some practicality but can still entertain on the short journey. I'd worry that getting some big engined barge would be wasted on such a short commute, when a smaller, nippy engined car would provide some good morning and evening entertainment when required.

Get a Ford Focus, Mk1 1600cc, for £1000 and pocket the rest, when you've finished with it and got your Boxster back, sell it on for probably zero depreciation!

No offence meant, but wouldn't something more interesting than a CLK be in order if mpg isn't an issue?

I presume that residuals will be important if this is a stop gap car? How important is the ease to sell it on going to be? i.e. niche cars often retain value better, but might be harder/take longer to sell on.

Although it would spend most of it's time on the commute, it would be my daily driver too. I have also considered Bmw 3 and 5 series. Although the Clio 182 is a great car, my friend has one and he's had a lot of trouble with it

4k for a pushbike! Wowsers.

As others have said, somethign small and nippy would be what i would opt for. Is it a long term keeper? or just a stop gap until the boxster is fixed?

Wow! How much?! My Cannondale Carbon Rush was 23lbs and I sold that for £1,400 IIRC!

I would buy a well sorted 172 cup for around £2,500 and pocket the change.

We’re looking for a similar car. Something to commute in 6 miles each way and odd trips to the shop and to family etc when I don’t want to use the Z4.

We’ll be replacing my girlfriend’s Honda Civic (2004 1.6 with 45k) and have a £4,000 budget. So far can’t find anything we really want. Thinking of maybe stretching the budget a bit and getting an early mk2 Skoda Octavia VRS (petrol).

Having said that, it would be a shame to see the Civic go. It's been 100% reliable and has cost next to nothing to fun!

More practical than a boxster, MPG not an issue, fun and with the engine reliability you've learned to love: RX8.

Although I'd rather buy one of the FD RX7 twin turbos, or a ratty 944, or an ITR, or the nicest E34 535 I could find.

Isn't that a rather boring and mundane place to be for a 5 mile trip though?
