I'am fully aware that many renal car driver don't understand the concept of speed bumps or pot-holes.
I'm just wondering how much pain buying ex-rental could actually cause on my bank balance. Been looking at 2012 1.6 Ford Fiesta zetec-s. The dealer (Evans Halshaw) has told me that one is ex-rental and the other has always been in the company. Both cars are in the Glasgow area and both have 'FE12' as the start of the reg. Just want to know what i could be getting my self into

thanks

Well it's in warranty, right? That's a good start.

Bad news is, it will have been broken-in as sympathetically as a Thai hooker.

I wouldn't be buying ex rental. People seem to think its acceptable to give these cars absolute death when they have them.

My mum bought an ex-rental 1.6 Automatic 'sport' Megane back in late 2000. It was a 6 month old car with 10k on the clock. Fast forward over 12 years and it now has about 45k on the clock, and the only thing that's gone wrong on it are the coil packs all packed up one by one, and that's it apart from regular servicing.

What car is fastest in reverse? A rental car
What car can go fastest off-road? A rental car
What car corners really well when you use the handbrake? .....etc.

Wouldn't worry too much. A main dealer's stock profile is largely ex- rental, 'Provincial Securities Limited', ' ERAC' (Enterprise rent a car) or ex motability. Certainly you'd like to think a 2012 car will still be fine.

Where do you think 90% of manufacturers' approved used stock comes from? A little secret - they're mostly all ex-rental, ex-lease or ex-demonstrators and millions and millions of people buy and own them for years and years without knowing. Ex-rentals will have been serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule since the manufacturers will only buy them back or take them off lease if this is the case. Most of the car rental majors keep cars for 9 months maximum, so this is often not an issue.

On average, they won't have been mistreated any worse than any other new car, since most customers (a) are not idiots and (b) have a personal liability in terms of an insurance excess or through their company policy.

If the car still has 2+ years of the warranty, why does it matter in any case?

I think abuse of hire cars is largely a popular myth. Have you seen what the hire companys charge for the slightest scrape or scuff on the paint of a wheel? I don't think I've ever seen one being properly abused in this country. Even when I was given one, the only 'damage' I inflicted was to the front tyres.
Breaking in isn't an issue because by and large modern cars don't need particularly gentle treatment during their break-in period.
Like the 'ex-police car' thread, I'd say the key to the decision is how much cheaper is it than a comparable car which isn't ex-hire? if the saving is good, I say go for it (pending inspection and test drive, of course)

^that, had a hire car a few months ago. I remember the excess being 3 or 4 times what my own car policy excess is. I drove like a saint for the entire 3 days! paperbag

If you want to see some ragged hire cars for sale, ex Enterprise try searching SWS salvage.

If its on a dealer forecourt and they have been upfront buy it

Or buy separate excess insurance and drive it like you stole it

cheers guys doesn't sound as bad as i thought. just looking at one for my first car (been driving my dads for a while) just want it to last me.
So the warranty definitely transfers onto the next owner?
found the owner of the garages wife's bank card in the car park might try for a wee discount with that.
yeh i have heard that rental cars work best with the handbrake on round corners.

Have a look at Motorpoint whilst you're at it - they have a branch in Glasgow too:

My 320d in my profile was bought from a main dealer with 2k miles on the clock. The previous owner on the V5 is listed as "BMW UK, Bracknell" and I'm told this could mean its an ex-rental car. I got it for a reasonable price, I've had it for nearly 5 years and it hasn't blown up yet.

As others have said, not all rental cars get thrashed. I'd worry if it was a high performance car (think there was a thread a while back, where someone was worrying that they had inadvertently bought a Merc C63 that was ex press fleet?) but for plain vanilla cars I don't think there's much risk.

I have never driven a rental car my self (too expensive due to my age) but my dad has and he has never treated them badly most would hopefully be treated nicely

That's good to know want mine to last me a while longer than that as that will be first flat time (hopefully) 5 years is a good amount of time smile
