I wanted to help out friend who wants to sell a very, very special plate.

He's had it for years and gets offers everywhere he goes.

He's even turned down £100k for it before.

3 digits, can't really say more at this time.

What do people here advise?

I figured ebay and an ad in the Sunday Times.

Anywhere else?

If it's really worth that much then surely someone a bit more specialised is best, like Coys or H&H?

Thanks for the replies, I had some plates in Top Marques for 6 weeks, not one single call!

Customer service was appalling as well. Promised me a refund for mis-spelling, still no sign of it.

Ebay was good for my previous plate, although not as special as the one your friend has by the sound of it.

Contact whoever offered him 100k for it and sell it to that person? 100k is a lot!

Drop me a line with it and I'll give you an honest appraisal.
everyone thinks they've got a great plate, but reality may be a little different.

I know someone who calls everything he owns "special" like his cars, bikes, nik-naks etc. He seems to think that if he tells people enough times that something's special, it'll become special. If it really is that special, it shouldn't need much advertising to sell it.

If he gets offers "everywhere he goes", surely all he has to do is accept one of them?

I knew a chap with a very cool plate who would come back to his car and find note after note on the screen asking for it to be sold, he bought plates and had written underneath "Only leave a note if you are offering a genuine and provable £25k to buy this", and lo and behold...

Off this particular topic but on subject of 3 digit plates. A colleague at work rocked up one day driving a few years old subaru imprezza with the plate 1VY on it. Being his name was Steve I had to ask WTF he was trundling round in a car with this SERIOUSLY expensive plate on. 'Oh, is that worth a lot of money then?' he said blankly!
Turns out it was his housemate who was from some extremely wealthy Asian family and his dad bought him a runaround and this plate (his initials) when he came over to the UK to stay for a bit. He buggered off back and left the car with his house mate to look after while he figured out what he was going to do with it. I've just checked on MID and it's showing as STILL registered to a Subaru Imprezza...I know Steve bought the car off him in the end but can't believe this guy would just leave such an expensive plate on it.
Either way, as 3 digit plates go I guess this was/is worth a few quid. Wonder if the IVY restaurant would buy it and use...

Would suggest against that or the thread may get pulled as an advert. smile

Looking at this:
http://www.platemaster.com/facts_most_expensive_nu...

(it may be dated)

Then it does not look like 3 digits would command 100k plus unless they are very special...

So I would say your mates best bet is to sell it to the person that offered 100k for it...

It's not my plate unfortunately, it's for the owner to discuss publicly not me.

Discretion is nearly always preferred with high ticket transactions.

Wouldn't have thought much advice is necessary other than accept one of the many offers.

I have no idea why you'd not mention what the plate is - it's not a state secret is it?

He's not worried we'll all go around with suitcases of money!?!?

A lot of people think any numberplate which remotely looks 'short' or has a name on it is worth a fortune - that's because they see such plates advertised for fortunes.

Problem is, the majority of them don't sell or if they do it's for FAR less than the silly price on the tag.

End of the day it's a buyer's market for most plates - and buyers can be hard to find (which is why most numberplate sellers spend FORTUNES advertising plates)

If it's truly an exceptional plate, he should contact a proper auctioneer who will advertise the plate widely and get the best possible price for it (although it may not be the price he wants at that time)

It's it's just a short plate but not really meaningful - he might need to recalibrate his expectations a bit.

p.s. as an example, I know someone who had a decent plate for sale. He called a few dealers and the best offer was £8000. He thought that was mean and so he started to advertise the plate himself, talked to some auctioneers etc.

6 months later he'd spent almost £500 on advertising and the best offer he'd had was - £8000

He put it into an auction - the auctioneer had it set at £12K with a reserve of £9K

It appeared in 3 auctions - best offer was - are you ready for it - you know what I'm going to say - £8K

He took that - less 20% premium and the £500 he'd spent (plus a stload of time)...
