Private number plate locating
Discussion
hi,
introduction first, my name is Gav, while searching the net i came across a post in the gassing station so i signed up in the hope someone will be able to offer advice or at least point me in the right direction in my quest.
what i'm after is the location of an old personalised existing registration, recently i've seen a car with a plate i liked and then had the idea of a similar plate using this one i'd seen for a base.
i then went on all the sites i could find selling registrations looking for this plate but nobody had it for sale, so to check it exists i typed it into the insurance database and it is not registered as being insured, so after that i went on the dvla website for new registration and it said 'no longer available' so i just decided to write the registration into google and Boom!, it pop'd up and i thought i'd found my first lead.. but has since turned into nothing but a little tease...
it was the first site that came up in the google search (regarchive.com) and it says that the registration was first registered during the following dates and that it was first registered in Peterbrough.
now i don't know what else to do to see if it still exists, where it is, what cars is it on, or where to go about locating it...???? ARGH!!!
having all sorts of people telling me different things i don't know which one is best, if any actually work, so looking for help as what to do next...
i've been told to contact dvla so i did, but that didn't go anywhere due to the ridiculous auto answer machine they have, then being transferred to the same department and back, TWICE and still getting the auto machine...
i've been told to apply for the car owners details in paper at the post office via the dvla...???, apparently there is a form used for instance like if you were hit by another driver and somebody got the reg... never heard of it and woman in post office looked blankly back and said ring dvla (-not again thanks!)
another person said just apply for a replacement V5 at the post office which will have owners name and address on, (i'm not sure if even legal.!!??)
i've also tried the dvla section about private reg's but they said i need the actual dvla for enquires in registrations already assigned to vehicles...
and other private reg sellers want big money to see if it's for sale (none refundable).
so now i was just about to give up and thought i'd ask for help...
sorry for the long post..
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.
Gav

Probably best not to do this...You can write to the DVLA to get the owners details but you need to have a valid reason. I can't see your reason, however innocent, being an acceptable one but i'm not sure of their exact criteria

hahaha, i know, however tempting i can see this getting me into real trouble...You can write to the DVLA to get the owners details but you need to have a valid reason. I can't see your reason, however innocent, being an acceptable one but i'm not sure of their exact criteria
also the apply to dvla, seems like trouble again as i can't say it hit me as it might not be on any car and isn't insured...
thanks

Is it a 3 digit plate you are looking for?
I only charge a small commission
no, it's a full 7 characters...I only charge a small commission
what i'm really after is how to locate the car/owner myself...??? hahaha
thanks
Gav

From what I've been told as long as you've got the fifteen quid or whatever it costs and you don't list your reason as 'to track down and murder the owner of the vehicle with this registration' then you're in with a shot.FA57 GAV said:

So what exactly is it?
as you could probably guess i'd rather not say...no offence intended but this is the web, so me not wanting to is based purely on the basis of somebody possibly knowing how to proceed,
which is all the information i'm after..
thanks
