Hitting curbs!
Discussion
Hello guys....just wondered if you could help advise on a small (well hopefully small) problem that I have!
I hit a curb pulling away at approx 30 miles an hour and ever since doing this, my cars been acting differently on the motorway over about 60 / 70 miles an hour. The steering wheel doesn't vibrate or anything but it does seem to get a little bit stuck in a straight line and I have to force it when having to follow the road round as it turns slightly. Its as though its sticking slightly. Even though I don't feel its dangerous, it is annoying!
Does it sound like the tracking or wheel balancing or more like a steering control arm perhaps?
Its a brand new Insignia...

It sounds like it to me :PGet it to a garage and get it checked. Something is not right. It's not going to get better by itself but it could get a whole lot worse.

Really!! 30MPH
This is what happens when a 1500KG Estate hit a Kerb at 10MPH
Needed New Wheel, Tyre, Entire front suspension assembally, new steering rack, brake disk, wheelarch liner, control arms, front wing, front passenger door

That is what I was thinking. Unless he meant "I was pulling away in a 30mph zone", because anything other than a glancing blow at 30mph would cause fairly substantial damage. This is what happens when a 1500KG Estate hit a Kerb at 10MPH

Haha. No mine was the Octavia on the bottom. Few years ago i went round a bend that was just pure sheet ice. Fat wide summer tyres, plus heavy TDI up front and the whole car ploughed into a kerb at a very slow speed. It was either that or end up on top of an agila on someones driveway
kin hell !!It won't start feeling dangerous until the damaged part fails and you lose some or all of your steering.
Get it checked. Doesn't sound like balancing, sounds more like something has been bent or dented. It could be a damaged tooth or groove or something in the steering box which now gives you indexed (stepped) steering, or a bent tracking rod which fouls on some other part of the car at that particular steering angle, or something else. Is it the same turning left and right or one direction only?
If it is a bent part then it is now likely a weak spot, another knock will exploit that point, i.e. next time you hit a pothole you could well find your steering locks up completely.
No way of knowing without getting it checked but it certainly sounds like mechanical damage to a component.

Assuming you were on full lock or close to it on impact (most people keep winding on lock when they experience catastrophic understeer!) then it will probably have bent the steering rack "bar" This will cause the steering to stiffen or worse, jam up, as the bent bit gets pulled back into the rack.
Get it checked asap!

The other night "my mate" was driving like a t
t, He smacked into a kerb sideways at about 25mph, hard enough for the whole car to mount it and travel for another few metres, completely bent a steering knuckle but that was it, so the damage kerbs can do does vary, as according to some reports the £600 car should have been a write off with the amount of damage that should have been done, but it was just the knuckles. Got it fixed the next day and it feels completely straight. If your lucky the damage will be limited to just one or two components.
