My 2004 Focus has this intermittent problem where either of these lights will come on the dash every now and again.

I've had the wheels off recently to check for anything obvious but to no avail. The ABS system and parking brake both work fine also.

These lights are not on all the time, but every so often. I'll be getting rid of it soon, so could do with not spending any money on it! Any ideas on the possible cause and cheapest fix?

Check the brake fluid level is the first thing to do other than that it's a trip to a garage with a code reader to find out what is wrong.

Pads seem fine, in fact it had new rears on late last year. I'll check the brake fluid in the morning, thanks.

If they are low (the fronts perhaps?) the fluid level drops which is why your light keeps coming on intermittently.

The brake fluid is at a decent level, and i thought i'd take advantage of the 'free' brake check offered by Halford Autocentre at the minute.

Got a call about 40m after dropping the car off, to be told the front discs were worn and 1mm under the manufacturers minimum acceptable level (20mm). They recommended they are replaced and the pads too, even though they said the pads were good, but if changing the discs, should change them also.

I'm changing car soon, so am not going to lose any sleep of the 'worn' front discs! Warning light is still coming on, so assume it means i need to relace the pads/discs?

Nope just halfrauds trying to drum up buisness most focus don't have wear indicators so no way the light is for the pads, even if they did that wouldn't be the cause as the pads are ok and ford discs are only 20mm when new. It's either a fault with the sensor on the resevoir, a fault on the abs system, handbrake sensor fault or a problem in the ecu. Avoid using halfrauds.

If the abs is on with the handbrake light then yes will need to be code read then go from there.
