So im in a difficult spot here, i like all 3 of the mentioned car, more specifically, mk1 mx-5, mk1&2 mr2 and 318is or 320, iv'e chosen the 318is and 320 because of insurance due to being 18, the insurance is all around the same price roughly which is annoying because i was hoping that would eliminate an option. whats your opinion? i have driven the mk1 mr2 and loved it, looking at a mk2 this week, and an mx-5 next week hopefully. have driven a good friends 328 e36 and liked that too. Help!

Mk1 MR2 if you can't get insured on an MR2 Turbo, definitely.

Sorry, my earlier post was meant to say the MR2 Turbo is the pick of the bunch if you can get insured on one. Otherwise, the mk1 and mk2 MR2 are very good, the MX5 is pretty good and I wouldn't bother at all with the BMW's, not those engines anyway.

If you can afford it, I'd be going for a mk3 MR2. It pretty much matches the mk1 (and betters the MX5) for driving pleasure, but without all the rust issues.

I found the mk2 MR2 extremely disappointing.

Of the cars you actually mention, I'd be going for the mk1 MX5 just because finding a good mk1 MR2 is very, very hard.

2 of those are sports cars, one of them is a family car available in a few body styles. Unless you need the space of the BMW that would rule that one out for me (the 328 is the only fun E36 IMO).

Funny that we're the same age and looking at the same cars...

Personally I think I'm going to go for the 318is. While I have no doubts that the MX-5 and MR2 are just as useable day to day and are both faster cars, the two rear seats and boot in the BMW make it more practical for me. I also think I could take the E36 on long motorway journeys whereas I think either of the Jap cars would become a little tiresome after a couple of hours.

On the 318is/320i front: The 320i is gonna be the quicker car and smoother too, but I think down a B road the is would be more rewarding, especially with a couple of choice modifications.

its a difficult position isn't it? i dont really need the boot space of the bmw, all i want is to have rwd fun, these are the only cars that we can get insured on reasonably so, its difficult. the mk1 mr2 is the most tempting because its so out of the ordinary, its just that it was built in 1987......

£1800 for the 318is, haven't tried a 320i
£1600 for a Mk1 MX-5
£1800 for an MR2

If you don't need the boot space of the 3 series I'd say go for either of the others. Even though it's a BMW it's only an old 1.9 so it's certainly no ball of fire. I just need the practicality personally.

Ignoring the BMW as I haven't owned one.

Massive amount of space in a mk2 mr2. Reasonable rear boot, front boot (if you take out the spare, still get in a small bag if not), loads of room behind seats and in footwells.

MR2 is much more a cruiser and will happily do motorway miles.

MR2 is heavier, not as nimble or fun on the limit as a mx5. But, much more challenging to drive quickly.

MX5 is more fun, especially with roof down.

Make sure you do research and buy the right variant of either. As important as choosing the car. Buy on condition, not history or mileage.
