The launch of the R8 , everyone wanted one so Audi made all cars look like one , drl's , large grills , flat bottomed steering wheels etc ...

Funny this, I was asking myself the same question yesterday travelling through the snow.

I came to the conclusion that it was when the 8P Audi A3 came out.
Seriously how many black A3s do you see in a company car park?

Bloody loads.

When the A3 1.9 TDi in 'recession white' became an aspirational car.

I think the TT made them fashionable and as already mentioned the A3/A4 with the 1.9 tdi engine became more obtainable. So I'd say the metamorphosis was complete by 2003, with the launch of the mk2 A3 (?)

The TT, then closely followed by the A3/A4 shapes that came after it.

Having sold them in the mid 1980's it was when the Audi Coupe GT came out all the Golf GTI lot moved over on mass, all thinking they were driving Urquattro's, if they could not afford a coupe then it was an Audi 80 GTE in white instead.

I agree with the R8 thing. once that came out all the yoof that would pay £1.50 for their lambo mobile phone wallpaper from jamster decided to get the R8 instead. The ones that liked BMW have moved to audi.

Let's see how many tired cliches and boring rehashed opinions this thread will generate.

Indeed. My response would be when Clarkson said they were driven by cocks.

It's more the owners than the cars I'm afraid.

It's this. Agressive marketing including that tosser test drive advert kicked it all off.

When they stopped being discrete models and became badge engineered VW's.

I know what you mean but sometimes I feel I've got to run away. Really I've got to get away!

The goatee grill is when the rot started and they have become a lot more common and bling ever since.

Not that I dislike Audis, I just prefered them when they were more unsderstated. 90's Audis where the thinking mans choice.
