It has been several years since our Lord and Saviour (aka, Jeremy Clarkson) proclaimed that Audi has replaced BMW as the default choice of the go getting, tailgating, DRL blinding, rude, inconsiderate, aggressive (etc) photocopier salesmen*.

However, I feel that Audi will sooner or later succumb to it's own popularity and shall be replaced in the affections of that type of driver by another brand. The question is, which brand is poised to absorb all of the UK's most despised drivers*?

Mercedes appears to be trying very hard to fill every niche, increase the bling factor, and make every car come with AMG styling. Alas, Mercedes is already too well established as a purveyor of older folk's cars to make an impression on the youths of today.

I think Volvo has potential though. As with Audi in the late 80s, Volvo has aspirations of moving on up into the "premium" league of car companies. They have been working very hard to ditch their safe and steady reputation by taking an estate car racing, painting other estate cars yellow, and getting a racing outfit to paint it's latest cars electric blue. Oh, and they've been adding lots of turbo power to front or 4wd cars (like Audi does).

Increasingly, the designs of certain models have also become style over substance, with Volvo pushing it's R-LINE bodykits on entry level diesels (sound familiar?).

What does the rest of PH think? Will Audi fall out of fashion, and what (if anything) will take it's place as an outlet for all of our automotive ills?

  • Cars from other brands may also be driven by tts. Not all Audi drivers are tts. Other "tt cars" are available.
  • Massive stereotype for effect. I know some Audi drivers who are nice.
  • I actually like all cars irrespective of make or brand perceptions. Please do not make what is meant to be a light hearted thread into a keyboard warrior playground.

New series of TG due so maybe a new edict will come down for the PH Clarksonites to follow.

Am I to take it that some of the posters above me believe that if Jeremy Clarkson notices something it cannot also be true?

Hate to say it... But Jags. The brand is ripe for a resurgence and a well styled new era X-type would fit the bill perfectly

^^ I thought Jag weren't going to be replacing the X-Type. Good call though, the current designs are very eye catching, and they even sell some sports cars to increase the imagine®

I would go with Mercedes, namely the c220, c230 etc...

I've seen quite a few 07/08/09 models being booted round here, by the 'younger executives'

Who says Audi has to be replaced as PH's most maligned? I think Audi has several years to go yet... I think Skoda will have a brief period at the top spot and I think when they are replaced, it'll be by a korean manufacturer, possibly one sporting an American badge.

While a small part of me thinks that it could be jag I reckon it wont. It has to be some premium manufacturer that sells their car cheaply on lease or with a bog standard 1.6 diesel/petrol lump.

Just hope it never becomes Lexus. On a side note I would love to see mazda bring back their Eunos badge.

It will be Merc next and the Eunos badge has never been in the UK other than cheap imports or for trainspotters.

Maybe it's just around here, but normally small old-ish VW's (Golf/Polo/ even the lupo and fox). It's not the same quite the same thing as the audi, BMW. But the chav's around here seem to have a thing for them, so if a car is being driven an inch from your bumper, dangerous overtaking, or recently, just driving around without clearing the snow off the car, it will properly be a ratty mk4 golf.

But, more likey, Range rovers.

I dunno. The FWD 1 series thingy will probably tip the "finance deal and live in a cardboard box" crowd back in their favour.

Run along to Dr Google and run a history search. . .

Audi, Sline, TeDIum and the iLifestyle-considerablyricherthanyou-eventhoughirentit who drive them bashing began way before Ayatollah Clarkson said it.

He lurks. He lurks here.

D'you know what, I'm going to stick my neck out and say Hyundai.

Already seen some Audi-style manouevres courtesy of photocopier salesmen in their i40s, tack on their SUVs and add to the mix the 20mph in NSL pensioners, and the cocktail is thus a rather poisonous mix.
