After getting insurance on boxing day (bad timing by me, I know) my insurance co have decided that they need my student card. Fair enough I suppose because as I'm a student they must have decided to put me on a student policy.
However, they have also requested both parts of my license and my Mother's license as she's a named driver.

What is the point? I have never heard of any insurance company doing this and neither has any one else I have spoken to. Has this become common practice or are my insurers just being awkward by having this policy?

This will end with them claiming they didn't receive the ID's and invalidating your policy with no refund. Seen it before...

scan and email them? I seem to remember sending some documents to my insurers like that recently. Wasn't anything as 'important' as drivers' license or anything though.

Would anyone else be worried about sending off either their student ID card or both halves of their driving licence to soemthing that's unsecure
What chance of it being copied, lost or both?

Odd. If they do have a particular "student" policy - Christ knows why they would - then I can understand them needing to see an ID but there's no way I'd be sending my original, as like you I need it regularly and not just to get pissed in the union.

Never heard of an insurer asking to see a licence unless you have a serious string of convictions (such as 11 points from recent offences), though. Very strange. What's the company?

I do agree with the above poster that anything you do send, you'll want to get confirmation of receipt from them.

Just sending copies, well photographs.
I can't send the actual items for various reasons, I just think that it's really strange for them to be asking.

Why would they want copies of driving licences?

OP, are you both non-UK nationals?

They are asking for your mum's Licence as evidence she exists and has an entitlement to drive? After all, one could name anybody as a named driver and save some cash... Guess you're just being asked randomly, and it's nothing remotely sinister smile .

This happens to my wife. Were you born in the UK? If you were born abroad, even if naturalised thereafter?
Banks and insurers etc... do tend to want corroboration due to high levels of crime/faraud amongst some diverse communities.

Possibly, the company is Endsleigh.
Apparently they have just send my mum a stty e-mail about her not sending her details despite then not asking her before. All very odd.

It's high time some insurance companies got their admin systems sorted. It's a shame that the FSA can't punish the directors (not fine the shareholders) who can't seem to sort their businesses out.

I can understand them asking for your student card details, if you have insured the car as being at your/parents home but being at uni miles away..

It is fairly common for students to use their parents address as the insured address (for lower prices) but keeping the car at uni. I guess this may be part way to ensuring it is correctly insured?
