Car Registration Date Query - Pre March 06 tax band or not??

I'm looking to trace the registration date of a car to see if it falls under pre march 2006 tax or not since it's on a 06 plate.

I'm sure in the past you could get the date for free without doing an HPI check etc, but all the usual websites I've tried show make, model, engine size, colour and just the year.

Any suggestions?

You could do a vehicle enquiry on the car tax website to check what the tax rate is: www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk

If it was pre march it would be a '55 plate.

IIRC the tax change was 21 March 2006 not beginning March ?

ETA It was 23rd March 2006

Changeover of the bands was 21/03/06, so you could have a car that was on an 06 plate registered before this. You need to check the date of registration of the vehicle to work that one out. Not sure how you find out if it falls in this area without asking the seller.

Jammy git. Just bought a car this morning registered on 30/3/06. So, that's £450 quid a year then instead (slightly cheaper as LPG)
