Insurance advice required, claiming on a second policy.
Discussion
Hi All,
Recently i left the house to find that someone had had a collision with my car. The front wing needs replacing along with damage to the door and wing mirror. I was very angry for the rest of the day thinking that i would just have to pay for the repairs myself because someone was too dishonest to admit to it.
After getting my friendly local bodyshop to have a look and provide a quote (used them in the past, great lads), i realised i would not be able to afford the repair for quite a while.
I had instantly assumed that there was no point in claiming on my insurance because i would lose my no claims bonus and would probably have to pay the cost of the repair many times over in increased premiums in the future.
Then i got to thinking that actually the car was insured on a second car policy that wasnt using my no claims bonus. The policy used to be a classic policy that covered my classic weekend toy. When i sold this and replaced it with a more modern audi a4 cab, the insurance company offered to transfer cover to this.
If i claim on my second policy to repair the audi will i lose the no claims bonus i use on my main vehicle (insured by a different company)? If i do claim what affect will this have on future premiums on both my cars?

You will not lose the NCD on the main car which is with another firm and is gained separately.
You do need to tell both companies of the incident for which you are claiming for the next 5 yeas though. You should also tell any other policies in which you are a named driver - wifes car for instance.
For this claim on the A4 you will need to pay your excesses (voluntary and mandatory) to get the claim sorted. Any NCD that may have started to be gained on this converted policy will not be given.
I had a similar situation, I bumped my motorhome and needed to claim on that policy. It had 1 years NCD I think on that policy, my car has 6 years NCD which was safe, the wifes car has 7 years NCD in her name and is also safe.
The MH no claims bonus was therefore gone. Some policies acrue NCD for motorhomes and others don't bother though so it jumps about a bit for me between the years of firms who care and those who do not ask.
I now need to tell, motorhome policy of the accident (tend to move year to year), my car insurance need to know as I am riskier (ggrr) and the wifes car insurance also need to know about my incident as I am a named driver on her policy.
Premium increased are harder to guage, we do move around policies chasing the best price each year but my incident adds maybe £5-£10 a year to each policy. So over 5 years and 3 policies, max £150 it will add.

Thanks Ben, that was a tremendously useful post, just the sort of info i was looking for. I might ring up a few insurance companies and ask how having a claim would affect my premium even if my no claims bonus was still intact. If the increase was as small as it was for you i would be happy with that. Now to check how much my excess is...
