I bought a car battery for a Ford Mondeo from Halfords 4 years ago. It was one off their shelf that you just put straight on the car and go, no pre-charging etc. However, I never fitted it and it's just been sat at the back of my garage for 4 years.

Presumably if I just put it on a battery conditioner for a few days, I should then be good to go with it?

That is a "how long is a piece of string?" question

No, no, no, you've all missed the point. This is PH. Somebody on here should be able to tell me the exact condition of the battery, how long it will hold charge for, what the current charge is, etc, etc, simply from my vague and unhelpful description.

True, there should be some scientific graphs or something that someone can deploy

Using the "witch-dunking" logic, just open it up & taste the fluid inside. If it burns your tongue off a bit, it works.

This should answer your query.

As you can see with the green section, it is slightly larger than the blue section.

Surely if you have decent battery charger/conditioner, it will tell you what you want to know when you connect it up?

A battery conditioner may recover it, however some of them dont work from totally flat. if thats te case you may need to borrow one or take it to a garage where they have a brute force one.
It will not work as well as one thats been looked after as the plates "suplphate " when they are left dischorged. It's entirle possible that it's not recoverable as well.
So maybe/no i rhink.

Standard car batteries hate going flat. if your battery has just been sitting in a cold garage for 4 years then chances are it's nackered.

There's nothing to lose by putting it on a conditioner for a few days but I don't think it will ever be as strong as it was originally.
