So its probably been asked on here before, but why is it so bad. Easy test, too much cheap vodka, bad car maintenance, or a bit of all of the above.

All of the above, plus a lack of manners and patience

I am currently in Azerbaijan, the standard of driving terrible to put it nicely. Horns blaring for no apparent reason, an inbuilt inability to queue and manage lanes is merely the tip of a large iceberg

On the subject of Azeris, the middle aged women are arrogant boots, seriously not very nice people from what I have experienced so far

From what I have seen on the multiple youtubes videos its either impatience as most crashes are during an overtake or tailgate. There is also the maintenance side of it on a lot of videos. there are loads of clips where the wheel bearings let go of the wheel.

How can one base an opinion from YouTube videos, how do you think crashes happen here?

Driving in Turkey was really impressiv e, Nowhere near bad as people said.

My last hie car in Ukraine braked funny and on opening the glove box a pair of brake pads were thrown in there..... the large multi national hire co were not interested as the car moved!! (so you could say maintenence isn't a strong point!!)

oh and first time I drove I got pulled for speeding within a mile of the airport... 85kmh in a 60 limit...... $20 fine and I was on my way again (no paperwork was completed!)

East Europeans have gone very quickly from driving Trabants to driving BMW's however the infrastructure is still largely geared towards Trabants.

From the videos, alcohol may have something to do with it...

I think a lot has to do with the mentality of the locals. Some nationalities seem to have a far more care free attitude to things like personal safety. You just have to adjust your driving accordingly and you'll be fine.

I mention Youtube videos because in all probability this is what the OP is referring to. I'm not saying crashes here happen for any other reason, i'm simply saying that going by the evidence we have, which seems to be online videos that tailgating and general impatience is the reason a crash soon follows.

The youtube videos are funny/ shocking but a lot of footage that's been condensed down from how long? Years?

If you filmed loads of uk crashes and put them in a 5 minute youtube video you may think driving standards are also appalling there.

I spend most of my year in Moscow, the rest in London, everyday I'm in either I drive.

Russians often buy there licences
Police can be bribed
Politicians and officials have drivers/ convoys on blue lights that drive at speed the wrong way down roads!
The standard of road surface in Moscow is far far superior to that of the uk!
Russians don't queue, they appear very rude/ aggressive in their cars, everyone is trying to get one over on everyone else.
Lots of new ML's, Cayennes, x5's etc... Mixed with Ladas and other st boxes
Overtakes, undertakes all legal and happen often at speed, often at the same time.
The above is carried out while texting/ phoning etc... All legal
Snow and ice added into the mix for 5 months
Drivers often ignore pedestrian crossings, red lights etc...
Pedestrians walk out on their crossings without looking as if they have a force field!
Above two mix very badly

I could go on and on, however I would say the majority of drivers in Moscow are of a far better standard than the uk.
There is a lot of clueless, ignorant, unaware drivers in the uk that would'nt survive a day here, that tends to keep the standard high, drive like an idiot here and you won't get away with it, put your average Russian driver in the uk, it would be a walk in the park.
