Looking to buy a e38 750il. None are up here in scotland so i would need to travel.

Sadly im 18 so i cant drive one back on my insurance.

1 day insurance wont let me drive a 5.4l v12 at 18 (wierd eh)

Would i be able to take a mate down (30+) and pay for 1 day insurance and he could just drive it back?

He would use his own policy to drive it third party but not all the 750il are insured by people so wouldnt work.

Will NOT be cheap.

Times it by 365 and it looks VERY expensive

No it just needs to be insured for 1 day to drive it home.

Going to use it my self on my own policy when i get my years no claims in march.

Planning it now so i have a month or so to fix problems that it will no doubt have.

I have used it for several cars i have bought just to get them home, you do not need any other insurance. Price varies on the model obviously usually between £20 to £35, it does not cover all cars however, i cannot get it for an Impreza turbo for an example and my age is not a factor.

I presume 5.4l v12 325bhp cars are out also then?

Would paying for a months insurance for him then cancel after 1 day work also?

Him being 30+ with wife and kids should make it quite cheap for a month right?

I've used DayInsure a few times. They seem to be a bit variable with the cars they insure e.g. they once insured me to drive a Corvette to Le Mans and back but won't insure anyone else on my Caterham. All very strightforward to setup though.

You have checked quotes right? I'm also 18 and pretty lucky in that I seem to be able to insure a lot of stuff, but any 7 series is incredibly expensive for me to insure, with most companies refusing to quote. For comparison, a 750iL comes up as £9000 for me, whilst a volvo 850 t5 comes up as £1100, an e39 540i at £2000, XJ40 at £1400 and alfa 159 at £1300. I'd make very, very, very sure you can get a decent quote next year - without something in writing from the insurance company (which they would be unlikely to provide) there's no way in hell I'd be doing it if I was in your position

Trailer? 4x4 lugging that old barge around is still going to use less fuel than driving it under its own steam biggrin

Other alternative drive it round the corner from sale, have a self induced breakdown, get recovered home (pour some sugar in fuel tank)

The third party thing is only any good if it's insured by the registered keeper. On the basis of the car being sold to you, it'd be reasonable to assume you'd be the registered keeper, so for your mate to drive it third party on his insurance it needs to be on your insurance first. That mumble about asking the seller to cancel the policy the day after etc, it doesnt wash.

If there's no insurance at all, neither you the buy or the seler, and you cant get tempcover to insure it for you, pick up the cost for your mate and everyone's happy. Just remember when the insurance cover runs out from temp, if it's on the public highway it has to be insured by someone

Have him check his insurance. Only they can tell him his situation. They may add the BMW for one day to his existing policy but DO NOT rely on 3rd party, as there may be conditions.

£3200 at 18 with 1 years no claims and 2 parents as named drivers. (been doing the quotes weekly for 4 weeks and lowest ive seen is £2500 and £3700 is the most in this time (out of the lowest ones ofc))

Want to say ive ran a v12 once in my life before petrol costs too much.

Can always sell it after 3 months and get money back from the insurance as i pay it in 1 go.

Will still have my crappy dieing focus lieing about to go back to if i run out of money fueling it biggrin

Yes I've used RAC day insurance before, I think AVIVA are the actual underwriters on the policy, just make sure you print out the document as proof of insurance in case you get stopped.

The bit in bold is what I'm talking about. You may get £3200 right now (which I still think is just too much to spend on insurance, no matter how fantastic the car is), but you've no idea what it'll come up with next year. Even if it's the same, what happens if someone drives into you in the next few months? A non fault claim, let alone a fault claim, will push that up a huge amount and no matter how good a driver you are, these things can happen.

I'm not going to come out with the usual PH bks of "I had an austin allegro when I was 17 so you'll have great fun with a 1.0 fiesta" but I'd recommend keeping the focus for another year, or getting something more fun but with a sub £2k insurance quote. MR2s, celicas, e39s, alfa GTVs, subaru foresters, Jag XJ40s: all those should be insurable for considerably less and still a lot of fun. £3200 on insurance is just too much, and I can guarantee you'll regret it in a few years when you could do with the money for other things
