hey there basically im looking to buy my first car, may take a few months maybe years lol.

As I live in a town linked to Bradford the insurance prices are horrendous. As much as I would like a 850 T5/Nissan Primera GT/ Vaux Vectra Sri etc etc I get stupid quotes even using my father as the policy holder.

Im hoping to see what you may suggest for a budget of £750? Car has to be under 1600cc. 5 Doors

im thinking of the likes of:
- Vaux Corsa SXi
- Vaux Astra
- Toyota Yaris

what may you suggest? Also approval needed from the judge (my dad) as he says buy a Polo but I think they are hideous! + small bare in mind m over 5ft 10 i think.

Sorry for the nattering over to you guys...

Mk1Yaris 1.3 is far better than it has any right to be.

In truth at 5'10" you should be able to drive anything pretty comfortably.
I'm not going to suggest a car because your decision depends entirely on the mercy of insurance companies. Get quotes for everything until you find something reasonable.
My money wouldn't be going on a Vauxhall. I'd go for something jap or deliberately pick something old and extremely simple so it's less likely to go wrong and cheaper to fix. Peugeot 306 (old shape) perhaps? Or a Yaris, Corrola, Civic etc.

Yeah man forget any possibility of owning something exciting! A few years back you could buy an old classic or a kit car (like I did) and insure it for less than a little hatchback and have much better performance but I think these loopholes have been closed since then.
As I say, can't really make any sure fire suggestions because it all comes down to insurance really. Just keep quoting. Try some lesser known models like the Seat Toledo, Citroen Xzara, focus/mondeo etc because these aren't your usual youngsters choices.
Re: Vauxhall, just speaking from my experience of vauxhalls of the sort of age you're considering. The mk4 Astra wasn't a bad car but to be honest the Ford Focus came along and kind of pissed all over it. The Corsa C had a fair few little faults that you don't find with other manufacturers too. The bottom end of the range is the 1.0 12v which was frankly dreadful compared even to a Ford ka or a 106 or something...

P.S. not a Vauxhall 'hater', I just think that 1997-2006 weren't really a good period for them!

Get yourself a K11 Micra. They're surprisingly good to drive, cheap and reliable. I still know a couple of people who refuse to get in a car with me after experiencing me driving one as a courtesy car many years ago which was driven everywhere in second and third. It seemed like it was being driven like a nutter but wasn't at all quick.

Yup even to hear That there is a 1.0 avaliable corsa seems horrific. It even sounds like its gutless. Would not mind the 1.3cdti but they will not be anywhere near my budget!

The mk4 astra I think is just about acceptable in the 1.6sxi spec in my opinion!

Try a mk5 astra 1.4. I had one as my first car, not very exciting but extremely cheap to insure. Decent interior for what it is and you get alloys, air con etc which makes it a bit more bearable.

Nothing wrong with a Polo!

It has been an amazing first car for me, plenty of room and I am verging on 6'3"!

Look what all the local chavs are driving ie corsa , punto etc then choose the complete opposite and you will find prices are lower

nissan micra
skoda felica

Yup, and theres just something I don't like about them carnt put my finger on exactly what though. Yes I know for my budget i cannot be picky. The one my neighbour has had some money spent on it, to freshen it up e.g. Suspension parts etc so I would of lived with that because it would of have been trouble free. As he actually takes care and pride of his car.

Im sorry dont want to sound big headed or ignorant. I appreciate you contributing to the thread

Just so that I can put it into prespective. Insurers wouldnt want to touch me with a barge pole with anything bigger. As i have tried getting quotes on grandad type of vehicles like a Toyota corolla verso, saab's, volvos and even Honda Jazz's everythings coming up at £5000+ as a 2nd driver!

If there's no rush and you can actually wait a year or two (or ideally, more), you will save a small fortune by holding out. Then your first car could be something 'reasonable'. Otherwise I support the advice to go as leftfield as possible, but accept that whatever you do, it is going to cost a lot.
