Did try searching previous topics but couldn't find an answer.

Went to fill up my mondeo in a supermarket yesterday and only one pump had diesel and was being used. All the other pumps had City Diesel on them. I was pushed for time and filled up later at traditional petrol station as was wary of using the City Diesel as know nothing about it.

What is city diesel and will it be good/bad/indifferent for my '51 plate 2000cc Mk4 Mondeo?
What about our '57 plate E61 530d M Sport?

Third car is petrol so not applicable.

I often use it without any issues (and I don't really do any city driving). My diesel is a company car, so it would only be a minor inconvenience if it were to implode.

That said, diesel from other, non-supermarket, garages does seem to return better mpg.

I'd be very interested to know. I use Morrison's diesel by virtue of it being cheap, but I know it's considered pretty crap fuel. Can't say I've noticed any additional mpg using decent Shell stuff, so the jury's out a bit on this one...

It will be ok as long as you stay Urban. Stray off limits and your car will automatically stop.

I thought city diesel is just ultra low sulphur diesel and as such is fine in any diesel car.

Yeah I thought the same, City Diesel is just Low Sulphur?

Better for the environment / people, but makes no difference to the fueling itself.

I had an S60 D5 that I drove pretty aggressively and had from 94,000 miles to 160,000 miles commuting up the M6 200 miles a day and used Morrisons / Tesco City Diesel normally and never had an issue.

Seemed exactly the same to drive on even when going flat out alot.

Pretty sure our Asda / Tesco / Morrisons dont do "regular" diesel, you can get V-Power at shell, but that has cleaning additives liek their petrol V-Power, teh other pumps are the same low sulphur diesel.

Its all low sulphur.

Ignore all the piss takers above... although the thought of it conking out on the motorway is hilarious biggrinlaughlaugh

It's low sulphur diesel, costs around 2p per litre more than normal diesel, and is designed to give lower emissions, hence being ideal for city use.

It's perfectly fine to run on the motorway, and it won't harm your engine - in fact quite the opposite, it should be better.

It's like red diesel. If they catch you outside the city with it the DVLA will crush your car and steal your first born. I think it's also called green diesel! wink
