Future father-in-law has scrapped his car and isn't bothered about keeping the private plate on it. He's sold it to a local scrappy that he knows and is waiting on it being collected.

Now I fancy taking the plate for my own car but I'm not sure how to go about it.

I've had a look on the gov.uk site and dvla but it's not the easiest to work out. Think I need to get confirmation of scrappage if it ends up being scrapped or a form for the transfer. He knows the guy he's sold it to so reckons he could go and get the plate back if he wanted.

Any ideas as to how to go about it?

Put it on retention before you do anything about scrapping it. I've a feeling the car will still need a valid mot. Cost is £105 (as I remember).

Edit: has it actually been scrapped yet? What is the status of the V5?

Still has current mot and tax. Sitting outside their house just now waiting on pick-up. Not sure who has v5c.

You need to act now to save the plate before a certificate of destruction is issued. Get onto the scrap dealer and ask him if you can have the V5 back. Print off an application to retain a registration mark off the DVLA website and get it sent off with a cheque. Touch wood it won't be too late!

Cheers for your help. I take it I need a v317 form?

I'm hoping to just transfer it rather than retain it if at all possible?

Transferring to your car wouldn't be an issue and is a bit cheaper at £80. Make sure you keep hold of the tax disc too because you'll need the serial numbers off both discs to do the transfer, along with the mots. You won't officially be able to scrap the car until a replacement V5 arrives with a re-issued reg number.

To speed up the process fill out all of the relevant documents and take them to the local DVLA office if you have one close by.

A couple of weeks ago I put a number plate on retention and it took two weeks for the V5c to come back. That is something worth thinking about especially if the car has to be sat around for that much longer.

The transfer is done as soon as DVLA have the documents and issue the replacement tax disc showing the new reg number. The V5 follows later and is not critical to the process.

NB If DVLA decide to inspect the donor vehicle it needs to exist!
