Hello guys wanting a bit of advice off the masses..
I have the opportunity to buy an Audi A4 1.8t Quattro (2000 B6)for £300 and use as a track car.. The car in question is my dads he has had it for over a year and i had it for 2months before him.. (I only sold it because i got offered a Blobeye WRX that i couldn't refuse).. Just before Xmas the audi was Written off by the Insurance company.. It was shunted from behind and the damage doesn't seem to bad no airbags went off, no engine managment light, starts, drives and seems ok accept from some small creases in the rear quarter, Dent in boot lid scuffed bumper and the cd player jamed..
So do i buy it and use it as a track car..
Thanks

A friend of mine used to track his A4 daily driver , took it to center gravity to be set up properly and then ran rings around everybody , I say do it !

Sounds like the perfect use for it.

I reckon it could be a good one. That engine is easy to get a lot of poke out of, there are plenty of OE bolt-ons to make it handle better, and there's a load of weight that can be stripped.

Agree, easy 300bhp.. fkload of weight to shed. Bargain car, that you know is sound. Parts etc a plenty.

What's to go wrong?

It might be a bit slow, heavy and hard on tyres/brakes. Just don't throw money at it trying to make it faster, except maybe sticking better pads on it.

Ive always wanted to do track days and was worried about using the scooby because the Mrs needs it for work.. (did do Curborough in the scooby and nearly killed the tyres then) So trying to convice her this is a good idea...

Is it just me that thinks an A4 would make an awful track car then? Better off with a cheap old 106 xsi or something?

Why do you see the touring car in your mind? Get it vinyled up, see it in your garage!

The road going A4 and the BTCC car, almost identical in every way obviously...

My thoughts too, you're blessed with it being a quattro one. A little less so that it's a heavier B6, rather than a B5, but all the same it'll be great fun!

Decent pads and tyres, and a proper full geometry setup, you'll be surprised what you can do with it smile

Crap for heel-and-toe, though.

Every VAG car I've owned it as been impossible to heal-and-toe or left foot brake as the throttle is cut as soon as the brake is applied!

I don't think you'd get that problem with a car of that era - my B5 A4 didn't cut the power either, the problem was more that the brake pedal was so damn high up and the assistance so strong that you had to be in a real full-anchors stop to reach low enough to get a meaningful blip hehe I imagine it would be doable on track though.

On most cars that do cut power when the brake's applied, a double-tap on the throttle while braking stops it and gives you control again.

My 2001 SEAT Leon Cupra did it. Came as a bit of a shock when I tried it!

It's not just you. Perhaps strip it out and fit sportier brake pads and fluid, use it for a season then give it away. It certainly isn't a car worth throwing money at. See it as a bit of a 'last hurrah' and it could be a lot of fun.
Also, I wonder whether it'd fit into any rallycross competitions? Now that would be fun.

Nope, not just you, I'm not really understanding the enthusiasm TBH.

Of course you could track it, but in standard form it's just going to eat through tyres and brakes, understeer everywhere and feel painfully slow.

You could spend many £100's or £1000's of pounds on uprated brakes, suspension, tyres, tuning, setup and weight reduction but that money would have been better spent on something that is more suited to the task in the first place IMHO.

As much as I love Audi's touring cars, there is a bit of a difference between that and an old, written off 1.8T A4! Still, might as well use it as a track car as it probably won't be good for much else. Just don't expect it to be brilliant on the track and you will have a good time.
