Currently driving an 05 A3 1.6, and ready for something new and exciting. Criteria is as follows (these are musts btw):
- Automatic
- Insurable for less than £1k for a 22 year old
- MPG of 35+
- Not stupidly slow (like the current A3, 0-60 takes 12s)
- less than 50k miles
- less than 5 years old
Budget is £14k.
I have identified 3 options, in order of preference:
1) Scirocco 1.4Tfsi
2) TT 2.0Tfsi
3) C30 R Design 2.0D
I appreciate its a rather narrow and weird set of criteria, but that's just me.

Not sure on recommendations of new cars but I would strongly recommend you avoid the 1.4 scirocco like the plague, that engine is an awful piece of machinery with well documented issues across the entire VAG range, they have recently brought out some improvements to it but anything not in 2012 I wouldn't buy for anything.
Is insurance on the 2.0tsi Scirocco too much for you? I purchased one a few weeks ago and i'm very pleased with it, should be able to find a good one in your budget.
MPG I get just over 30mpg and thats not taking it easy, I would imagine its capable of far more when you want it to be,

2.0 tfsi you'll be doing very well to average 35mpg.
Worth looking at the other twincharged 1.4s - my Fabia vRS was shockingly cheap to insure. It's parked on the street in north London, so insurance is a major concern - it came in well under half of what a Golf GTI would cost, and even cheaper than a Golf 1.6 TDI.

Hmm, I don't mind a bit less if the performance is there to match it. I just have serious issues at the mo with averaging around 36mpg and not having any sort of performance! Having said that less than 30mpg would make me wince far too often!I am really drawn to the TT still, it seems to tick all the boxes for me, I just worry in case they bring a newer/facelifted version out soon, and current prices drop down.
Thought about an Ibiza Cupra but thought the interior was appalling and I don't really fancy going back to a small car.
