Which one is better car to drive, mpg doesn't concern me as I only drive 20 miles a day (round trip)

The boxster, but a £5K z4 will be cheaper to maintain than a £5K boxster.

Also, go for the 3.0 z4.

"To drive" is subjective though. The Boxster is reputedly a better tool for crossing ground quickly, but for drifting on roundabouts I think it'd be the Z4 every time.

The Boxster is renowned for being an exceptional drivers car - one of the best ever, and has an engine thats in a different league to the z4's.

However, at that price point, like you i'd go for the z4.

Just how it goes about its business. The 3.0 z4 has a nice thrum off it, but the sound off a Boxster is just fantastic by comparison. Hearing one in full song is a real event.

Back in the day they often went neck-on-neck in magazines and tv-shows, and it was hardly david vs. Goliath.
The Boxster was rightly often regarded as slightly better, but not to the extent you are suggesting.
And besides, the Z4 was said to be more playful whereas the boxster was more of a precision instrument.

Both great cars, Z4 being a bit cheaper to run ( and not as prone to engine bork).
And dare I say it, the Z4 has aged more gracefully imo. Bangle was a genious ( E65 aside)

Looks like everyone seems to be in agreement.

The Boxster is in a different league to the Z4 but the Z is the safer option. Cheaper to deal with as it's just made up of BMW parts bins.

The Boxster is made up of bits from the Porsche parts bin....which is both the problem and advantage!

At that money, I'd probably lean towards the Z4. I prefer the Boxster in general, but that isn't to say the BMW isn't a superb car. A mate of mine had the choice between the two recently and went for an E89 Z4, whereas I would probably have plumped for the Porsche. He loves the straight six, I like the flat six, horses for courses etc etc!

Although id say the boxster is the better car, at 5k you are at the bottom of the market. you might get a 2.7 for that but really good ones tend to cost more.

I am agreeing with you - at that price point i'd have a z4.
A £5k Boxster is likely to be a 2.5, mileagy and costly to maintain properly as an everyday car.

The 3.0 is just about in budget and its a fantastic machine - my wife bought a 3.0Si Coupe brand new and loved it. She bought one of the new z4's back in may last year too, so we like them enough to put our money where our mouth is, as it were.

BUT, having had a couple of Boxsters about me last year - a 99 2.5(?) and a 2003 3.2S in my opinion the Boxster is the nicer drive. I loved the engine note - very different from the thrum of the z4 straight six, and to me it was more of an event to drive.

Head over to the poverty pork thread, amazing what 5k gets you these days. Plenty of happy owners there who has spend the equivalent of 2 sets of Ferrari 458 nutbolts on a sportscar wink

Last year I bought a 2001 3.2, 32000 mile Boxster S for just over £6k - running it for a year and 4K miles cost me 2 tyres and a service.

Good 3.2 S are out there for around 5K - and well worth searching out.
