Hi guys,

bit of a weird question but my housemate has just got a car which he is going to be parking on our drive (room for one car), we are treating it as first come first served but due to his working hours and the fact he doesn't go out it will always be his car there. I am ocd about my car and ideally would like a space to park it.

Would it be reasonable to ask my neighbor (four doors down) if i could use their space? They have no car and its behind their house so wont effect the appearance of the house. Should i offer a small monthly fee?

Ask them. I work away quite often Monday to Friday. When I'm not going to be home for the night, I text my next door neighbour and either he or his daughter will park on my driveway. Win win - they get an off road parking space and I get the security of my garage door being blocked and my house looking occupied.

It`s not an unreasonable thing to ask but I don`t think we ca answer for your neighbour.
If you get on with them and assure them it won`t cause them any inconvenience they may well be OK with it.

You can but ask smile

Thanks guys just wanted to gauge an opinion as i have never really spoken to them other than passing hellos. But i don't see it being an issue, if they ever need the space ill move my car.

"I'm using your space because some guys on PistonHeads said I could." biggrin

Ask first, if they pause, then say that you were thinking of some kind of monthly rental agreement. smile

Technically, your housemate should pay 50% unless whoever has his room has more rights over your space! wink

I would offer them a rental fee and split the cost with the housemate.

Yeah good plan, the thing is we can park on the road but its narrow and lots of lorry's come through so i don't want to leave it on the road all week.

It is only an e30 325i but its in good condition for 25 years so i want to keep it that way, my housemate has a £600 volvo v40 covered in rust holes.

Kept my work van in a neighbour's space as my car was in mine - she didn't want paying in spite of my offer to rent the space, but a bottle of wine every six months was well received smile

idea

Offer your mate 50% of what you were considering offering the neighbour to park in your space!

I'm also wondering this for next year, my house will have 1 space, and the other will be permit. We'll split the price of the permit but need to see how its actually going to work, if we can use the permit on either car, or if one has to have the permit and one in the carpark for the house.

Yeah, my P&J lives on the road because "her car is much newer and on finance".

Instead of rent per se, could offer monthly donation to charity of your neighbour's choice?

I'd honestly rather have the money, and think a lot of people would, after all, could say you'll donate, never do, free parking space.

As everyone is saying, you might as well ask. If they say anything negative about the idea just offer a small monthly fee until they want it back! smile
