My friend went out on a whim and bought himself a 1996 impreza wagon, with a rwd conversion done, after a couple of days of fun he noticed the clutch started to slip and that it needed changing, he decided that it would be a good idea to change the clutch on our driveway. we have the box all undone and everything removed, we spilt the box from the engine by about an inch, but for the life of us it wont go any further.

checking what we have done...
removed:
gear linkage and stabaliser bar
gearbox mounts
driveshaft
clutch release fork and slave cylinder
top engine mount
whole exhaust is off
gearbox oil is drained.

but the box will not go any further off of the engine, we have tried various straps pulling it, levers prying it and jacks holding in all manners of positions. were out of ideas....

any suggestions? any experiences with this job? thanks in advance.

By driveshaft do you mean the propshaft is off?

Have you removed the pin that holds in the clutch fork? I see you say above about the clutch fork but it's all I can think of is the pin.
