Whist parked some nice friendly soul has bashed my driver's door mirror, cracking the back shell and completely demolishing the mirror glass. As expected no note left! OK, it's a company car, is no big deal and it will be dealt with. If it were my own 'pride and joy' then I would have whipped it round to the body shop next door and they would have fixed it with little or no fuss even if the 'automatic dipping' mirror glass might prove to be a bit on the expensive side.

However, the rules are the rules and I have to have it dealt with via the company's approved accident management company. They deem the car illegal to drive without a driver's door mirror and, because the backshell needs replacing, it is not a 'mobile' job. So, today, a recovery truck pitches up with my courtesy car and the company car is loaded up and taken off for repair. It will be returned via recovery truck as well, when repaired.

All this for a broken mirror and a cracked mirror casing. God only knows how much this will cost!

At least it'd not the other extreme, a midlands electric board mechanic, a.k.a. fking chimpanzee, condescendingly informing me it was dangerous for me to drive the stty sherpa with a slightly cracked but quite usable wingmirror, before attacking it with a screwdriver and buggering it all up. Then returning the van back to me with it gaffer taped together and now completely useless due to non-adjustability and told to drive it until he got a new part.

Arigata-meiwaku (Japanese): An act someone does for you that you didn’t want to have them do and tried to avoid having them do, but they went ahead anyway, determined to do you a favor, and then things went wrong and caused you a lot of trouble, yet in the end social conventions required you to express gratitude

Be thankful you're not footing the bill. I had both mirrors smashed from my previous E46 coupe, and they were £450 each to replace. Coupled with the rather charming bumper scuff across the front wing, I all but gave up caring about that car in the end.

Yeah, your situation is a faff and wasted expense, but at least you're not having to empty your pockets and use your own time to go and find a repairer yourself.

Corporate gone mad. My old boss would have gone mad. I can just see him now "why did you not get it done on expenses" "If you'd told me we could have stuck it on my company card" etc....

Funny you should mention that - t'was my first 'port of call'. Oh no, can't be doing that, rules is rules, blah, blah, blah! No wonder we all pay a fortune for insurance these days!

He didn't like the rules and was responsible for signing off the car bills for the office.

We were often told off for using main dealers after warranty expiry (4 year policy on cars), and I remember the row he had with the fleet company when he wanted to use his local village tyre shop rather than kwik-fit...
