Both cars have had health threads about them over the past few days. The cost of the 944 and the Boxster is getting ever closer, both cars are fantastic drivers cars and no doubt both sets of owners consider their car the superior of the two (I know 944 owners do). So where would you place your money? Both cars have their weak points, 944s suffer rust and neglect where as we all know about the issues with the Boxster\99X engine.

As a current 944 owner who's got an unexpected bonus from work do I stick with the 944 (a 1989 2.7) and plough a few bob into the old girl or take the extra money and start looking at Boxsters?

I'm thinking in terms of driver enjoyment, running costs (second car, so likelyhood of unexpected big bills rather mpg etc) and depreciation

As an outside option I'm also considering a Clio v6 or a Impreza WRX STI.

I have always loved the 944 but thought it lacked something.

I have owned a Boxster and loved the car but was costly to run for the smiles it returned. £40k car runing costs remember, if only in keeping it properly and fitting proper parts.

These days I have an old golf and 1 1/2 968cs' biggrin

I would assume the running costs are comparable? As mentioned in the Boxster thread the Boxster is at a price point where a bit of home spannering is acceptable. A 968 CS would be very nice, however my bonus was not that big sadly :-(

Had most versions of the 944/968 and the turbo SE is the one to get, with some minor upgrades to give around 300 bhp.

The only Boxster Ive had was a 3.2S tip which was capable but dull, not very well made nasty inside and no fun if you enjoy a bit of oversteer now and again due to being over tyred, under powered and mid engined.

Hi, i've owned a 944 a few years ago....don't think i'd go back. Currently have a Clio V6 255 and an Impreza STI which i use in the winter months. The Clio for me is such a special car, every time its taken out its an occasion. The Clio i'll never sell, the Impreza is good but for me not so special,(great in the bad weather though).
Saying all this i'm thinking of getting a Boxster as well because they seem such good value !

Would be good to know how the costs compare between the 944, v6 and STI?

944 S2 or Turbo perhaps but I wouldn't bother spending on a 2.7

If you like sun and have only one friend / child - Boxster
If you worry about aging / skin cancer and have more than one friend / child - 944

wink

Agree its not the logical choice, but I've kinda grown fond of the old girl.

Had an mx5 so like a bit of open top motoring, only one leech child so far.

The 944, cost me a timing belt replacement, but the servicing i did myself. I think i replaced an oil pressure sensor and it took me an age to finally cure a water leak which turned out to be the sunroof.

The STI, recently had a timing belt and a few tensioners...almost £600, again servicing i normally do myself. But i think a clutch is due this year so that won't be cheap !

The Clio, i take to a specialist and so far have spent quite a bit, trophy coils, Janspeed exhaust, Aircon pipe, discs/pads all round,Recaro seats( i fitted),Wheel refurb and tyres the list is quite big..but depreciation is non exsistent so i don't mind to be honest. Its due a second cambelt change next year so another big bill! Obviously not all the work on the Clio was essential but for me its a keeper so i don't mind.

Both about 10p per mile sans petrol, that said the CS has also had a lot more spent on it over and above as it's staying with me for a long time unless someone gets really overexcited and offers me silly money biggrin

I found this too during the time I owned a 2.5 944 many years ago. I put it down to the fact that it had 2 (or even 4) cylinders too few. Great car though, however, Boxter prices appear very tempting now.

I'd say it comes down to a question of where you want your engine. There's something irresistable about the way a mid-engined sportscar changes direction!

I suspect the boxster is the better car, but I've never wanted one, or even sat in one. The 944 on the other hand I really want, even an old tatty one with 160bhp.

There isn't much logic to which cars I find desirable. Box flaired arches and pop-up lights win every time compared to not having a real roof. If the Cayman had been launched at the same time as the Boxster I think I'd have one by now.

Agreed, but try a CS one day. Almost as quick in that phase as the Boxster but so much more fun in many other areas. On a twisty road almost anything with less than double the BHP that hasn't got Caterham/Atom levels of focus canstay with a well driven CS.

The brilliant thing about the 944 is its practicality. If you don't need 2+2 seating and a boot the decision becomes a whole lot harder.

On the other hand, while prices have got a lot closer, your money will still go a lot further with a 25 year old 944 than it will with a 21st century Boxster.

Want factor on a Clio V6 is huge, but - anecdotally at least - they sound a bit nervous for enthusiastic road use. Any idiot can keep a naturally aspirated 944 pointing in the right direction. That's either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view.

Phase 1 should come with a new pair of underwear for every trip in anything less than bone dry conditions.

Phase 2 allows a lot more liberty to be taken before spitting you backwards in the hedge, although you will be going a bit faster when it happens. biggrin
