I'm after some opinions of the cars on our short list, please.
Price, no more than £24k and less than 1 year old.

This will be a long term purchase, probably 10+ years, so must be bullet proof and reasonably cheap to run. Mileage will be no more than 10k a year.
Looking for a medium size 4x4

In order of preference:
1/ Ford Kuga
2/ Toyota Rav 4
3/ Honda CRV
4/ VW Tiguan
5/ Nissan X trail.

Others I'm not sure about are: Audi Q5 (nice cars but very expensive. Lexus RX (same reason), Kia Sportage and Skoda Yeti (it's the brand name that bothers me on those two!)

Well if you want bullet proof then you can knock the Ford straight off that list, don't be afraid of the KIA too much, you can buy brand new and get 7 year warranty for your budget, have you thought about a Subaru Forester? They come with 5 year warranty now days, anything Japanese should be reliable. Also if you don't mind them Vauxhall do an Unlimited warranty on new cars too, personally not a fan but at least you should hopefully be covered.

Of those I'd choose the CRV or Rav4, but probably best to ask yourself if you really need a soft-roader/4x4 and if you'd be just as well off in a hatchback or small estate?

Looking at any of those choices and being concerned about brand name seems a bit silly to me.

For long term ownership I'd be looking at the CR-V.

Thanks for the help smile

We have had our Honda Accord for almost 10 years and it's been pretty faultless.

Reason for the 4x4 is we have very nearly been stuck in the snow on several occasions over the years, just a light sprinkling and it's complete rubbish and I'm not prepared to go out there and buy a set of winter tyres.

Also, my daughter could use a small 4x4 to get to the stables in the winter.
I had thought about a subaru, but I like the higher up driving position of something like a Rav 4. Visibilty is much better.

Cheers.

I think I'd go for the Yeti, either 2.0TDI or the 1.8TSI, a bit different, look pretty good, and apparently quite a good steer for large/high car.

They seem to get very good reviews.
