I'm looking at getting a new credit card so was looking at the airmiles/cashback etc and stumbled across this article on Money Saving Expert.

From my understanding, if you were to apply for an Amex credit card and download an app for your iphone/android called foursquare, you 'check in' to the Shell garage before you pay for fuel, fill up £65/£70 worth, pay on your Amex, and get £15 cashback.

It seems to good to be true, but I can't see the catch. I guess a lot of people will be caught out by the small print that the spend still has to be over £50 after you get the cashback, and therefore only fill up with £50 worth of fuel, but most cars take more than £70 of fuel these days?!

Small Print re: Shell
Check in at any Shell garage, spend £50, and you'll get a statement credit of £15 (valid until 18 April 2013). Also check out our cheap petrol page to see if there's any other deals you can combine with this. Remember your total spend after any discount still has to be over £50 to get the Amex cashback.

PS - Sorry Mods if this should be in finance, I'm coming more from a cheaper motoring perspective

Edit: Feedback suggests this is a one-off (i.e. it'll only work once). Might be worth looking into it and seeing if you'll use the other offers (also £25 off £50 spend at HoF) and decide if it's worth the effort smile

No, - it is spend £50 and get £15 statement credit- not spend £50 after the credit. There is no catch, except for having to deal with the somewhat erratic at times foursquare app.

I have been rinsing the amex/fourquare deals for sometime, including this one. This isnt the most lucrative one by any means (previous ones were effectively giving away free stuff- very useful if you have multiple amex cards) but still good nonetheless.

If you want a referral for the BA amex or for the platinum charge, drop me a PM and happy to help out.

£15 cashback to spend anywhere?

As in... a £50 tank instead of £65 for a 40 odd litre tank?

Holy fk.

I might be wrong but I'm sure my local Shell doesn't take Amex, so might be best checking that too!

I assume you know that this is a one-off, i.e. you only get £15 off your petrol once, not every visit.

Good find. Signed up!

Every Shell I've been to has taken Amex.

The way I read it is you can spend £50. But if you had a voucher or something that saved you a tenner you'd have to spend £60.

I.e. if £50 goes on your card you're OK.

To be fair, 15quid is 15quid smile

I did a similar thing with Amex, CarphoneWarehouse and XBox, the long and short of it meaning that a £150 Samsung tablet cost £70. The current 'deals' can be seen here Spend £50 at, say, HouseOfFraser and get £25 back seems alright to me.

This is ridiculously good.

I have just signed up for the Platinum Cashback Card and will definitely be using it for other purchases!

Here is an Amex link which gives you £25 for just setting up an account too if anyone else is planning on doing this:

The second it's set up they charge you your £25 annual fee and you're back to zero. . . . . . smile

I know - but 0 is still better than minus £25.

5% cashback up to £100 or whatever it is on first 3 months spend is very good.

I've done well out of this card for a few years now - general spending, the odd holiday car hire and so on, it all adds up so it's always nice to see the cashback coming... back!

Is it? You've got to spend £2500 on the card in your first three months on things you would've bought anyway at places that accept AMEX. Not sure I could be arsed TBH but good luck to you if you can! smile

You don't 'have to'.

Spend £1000 and you still get £50 etc smile

Supermarket shops and petrol soon add up!

Agreed, Amex isn't taken by a number of places, so worth checking before the fuss

Sorry, my interpretation of 'discount'. Makes sense if the till transaction needs to be £50+

That's a referral link, isn't it? Naughty....

If you have an American Express credit card (personal, not corporate or prepaid), and a smartphone, then you can get £15 back when you spend £50 or more at Shell filling stations. Sadly, the offer only works once per card. You've until 18 April 2013 to use it.

All that effort for £15?

I think I just wasted £15 of my time reading the terms biggrin
Didn't read that small print!! Will update the OP to advise people, well spotted

Most couple's have 2 cards though - so at least £30 to be had really.
