One thing I've noticed for a while now is cars on transporters having the last three digits of their reg plates being taped over. In nearly every case the cars are a bit bashed up and probably off to a breakers or something.

I was going to ask whats that all about but I think I've answered my own question whilst typing this.

Is it to stop the plates being cloned? Some opportunist sees a trashed car on the transporter and thinks he'll clone it and be a naughty boy with the car?

To think I've wondered this for a long time now, but as soon as I type it out it becomes clear... idea

not just that. Another reason is to prevent ANPR cameras picking the plates up and the car being reported as on the road un-taxed etc

Ah, that makes sense too. It would be a real kick in the goolies for the previous owner to be clobbered by the DVLA or similar as the truck trundled past a camera en-route to the scrappies.
