Thinking about a drop top for the summer. Which of the above would you have? Budget is around £47k.

Out of those two XKR, but why no 911 in your musings?! A very tidy 997 Turbo Convertible should be in reach with that budget, or a pristine Carrera

Not keen on the looks of a 911 cab, plus, they are too common.

I drive an XKR convertible albeit a 57 plate 4.2, been looking at doing exactly the same although not driven the SL.

The Jaguar has been superb, 2 years in and it's not missed a beat but just fancy a change, not exactly a looker the SL though and if I'm laying out north of £50k I want to think 'wow' when I open the garage.

Be interested to hear from anybody who runs the 63 though.

I like the folding roof on the SL, but the Jag is better value for money.
Off to test drive the Jag shortly...... Hope to get into the SL today or tomorrow.

Can you get an XKR with the 5.0 v8 with the sports kit? In black, there's little that I feel looks more aggressive and purposeful. And the noise!

If you are leaning towards the Merc SL ,check out the Mercedes threads and see the likely problems you could encounter. I did nt, before I bought my SL55!!. Great car but too complex ,with lots of EXPENSIVE problems all of which could ,and probably will rear their ugly head before too long.
I looked at the Jag too and wish I had gone that route.
Good Luck !

Had a new Xfr in 2010 and have a sl55 (for sale) now - modern jags are wonderful but if you are used to German quality the jag will annoy you it's style over substance where the SL is the other way round.

For balance my SL has cost me servicing and a reversing sensor in 2 years - nothing else - get a good one and it will be reliable for you

Well, had a run out in the Jaaaaag. Found it very comfortable, lots of power. I found that you could break traction very very easily with a prod of the loud pedal. Not sure how used to that I would get.
Build quality looked pretty good and the toy count was very high.
The salesman who promised to ring me back re a drive in the SL63, didn't. So will wait a few days to see what happens there. I'm leaning towards the jag atm, as overall, I was happy with the driving experience and also, you get a newer car (in manufacturers warranty)for less money.
