Your nieghbour is about to buy themselves a brand new car as they have won the lottery but they are entirely devoid of imagination and will buy the most popular car for a lottery winner. An Audi
And they are going to buy an entirely average car. Something really boring like a 4 pot diesel and being a 4 pot diesel it is never going to sound nice. It is not going to be a race tuned V8 its a dull tedious diesel.
But they are nice people so they are going to buy everyone in your street exactly the same car. Including the guy across the road who works shifts so can be leaving the house at oddball times and the other guy who is on call so often is leaving the house at 2am
However by some strange twist of fate you are suddenly in charge of the EU laws on car noise.
So how loud do you want this street full of 4 pot diesels?

I'm a fair minded man, I gave him the same noise level I would have for myself. Diesels can sound quite cool.

So I would also make a straight thru and remap obligatory.
I might just go out and buy one myself as a daily after watching that.

edit, couldnt resist this one.

There's a rather big point being missed here. Its not necessarily about sound level but type of noise and persona preference. I used to live near a park in a residential area. The sound of teenagers screaming and moped 2 strokes went right through me, horrible noise! Were as a deep but loud V8 rumble just sounds nice.
All sorts of noise have different effects but personally I don't like high pitch screeching or really repetitive bass (think expansion joints on a concrete road or the distant base thump of a night club). neither will score high on the DB meter but could if continuous make your life a missery.

Is this poll accounting for tyre or exhaust noise? Because exhausts on new cars are generally already quieter than the tyre noise above about 10mph, so I'd need to know what I'm actually voting on here. I don't see how we are going to reduce tyre noise soon, hence the EU going after exhausts instead.
Oh f
k it, "skip voting" it is.

Forgotten what the current drive by limit is, but it's 80 or 70 something dBA.
My vintage car is loud, circa 113dBA @ 1 metre but no current car is anywhere near that loud, and if one was, expect to get stopped for examination!

Seeing as I'm up and away by 05:50 weekdays it wouldn't worry me, I guess the question should be for my neighbours against me as my VXR8 with its Wortec exhaust isn't exactly quiet!
However, I try to be considerate, minimal idling and I crawl up my hill so as to not make too much noise, but there is an occasional exception and that is if my neighbours with more cars than a local car dealer park inconsiderately and make it difficult for me to get off my drive and facing up hill, only then do they get the wrath of 6.0 litres of American Chevy V8 muscle.

But what about people who like the noise of a wasp trapped in a tin can?All sorts of noise have different effects but personally I don't like high pitch screeching or really repetitive bass (think expansion joints on a concrete road or the distant base thump of a night club). neither will score high on the DB meter but could if continuous make your life a missery.
Should they not be able to hear this wonderful noise at stupidly high volumes

If the car and the way he uses it are legal, it's none of my business.
I disagree. Courtesy to neighbours beyond what the law requires is extremely important to a community. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
