First one of these I've put up but the long and the short is I've been given a budget of 40k for a car which needs to be our family car for the next 5 years or so ie ideal if we have kids, dog etc.

Ideally I would like something sporty however the 2 other people who are involved want a 4x4 but could probably get away with an estate. I'd still want it to be relatively spritely as my current steed is a 987 Boxster S (I imagine this may have to be sacraficed next year when I'll probably get a 2nd Elise).

Any suggestions, can be both new and second hand? In addition I'm looking for something with reasonable running costs, diesel even better.

Cheers

Chris

So its you and two other people?

How very modern...;)

Id be swayed by the Lexus ISF, saw one a few mounths back, looked superb.

Or the XFR, so mean in red with the large bonnet buldge!

Or how about a Maserati Gransport, well in budget and meant to be rather brilliant. 4 seats but 2drs.

EDIT missed the reasonable running costs bit...

Lol, well it will be a shared car between me and the missus and my mother (who's happy to borrow the missus' Mini Cooper most of the time).

Loved all the ideas you put forward.....apart from the running costs!

Anyone got an experience with infinity suv's/4x4s or Lexus?

Isnt the XF 2.2 diesel meant to be rather good?

Im sure you can get some 'pack' to get it looking like the XFR.

Do you look at depreciation as "running costs"?

Well why not get a 4x4 for 20k, and get something YOU want for the rest of it ?

C63 AMG estate, by miles.

If running costs scare you that much, get one for lower than your budget and put some aside.

Am testing the 3ltr V6 for the site I write for at the end of April so will see how that is.

Am keeping hold of the 987 for at least another year. The car we are buying needs to be a 5 year at least jobby

Cayenne seems to fit the bill perfectly. Ignore any naysayers until you've driven one, they're utterly superb.

Not too bothered as the car will be kept for a long time

Gave Porsche a call but with the budget there are no used diesels later than 09 on our budget and for what we are spending I want a car a bit newer than 4 years old!

I do like them and how they drive but have only ever tested a 2012 ie brand new one.

OK, I'm now biased, but Jeep GC SRT8?
Running costs are a bit high but it'll tick all your other boxes and you should get a recent one for £40k.
