1) The guy in the inside lane shouldn't have been undertaking.

2) He shouldn't have been able to undertake because those sitting in the overtaking lane shouldn't have been there until they were actually about to pass the slower car, as they are supposed to keep leftmost at all times. But they were there because if they weren't then nobody would let them out from behind the slower car.

3) Those sitting in the overtaking lane must have been too close to the cars in front if the guy in the inside lane was unable to pull out without forcing his way in. In fact, they probably closed up to stop the guy in the inside lane from pulling out.

So basically everyone is at fault. It's a sad indictment of today's driving standards.

I expected the OP to say the car used the hard shoulder - I've seen that a few times, including on the M5 on a left hand bend where if anything had been on the hard shoulder it would have been obliterated.

Phht, I can beat that. I was coming back home just north of there yesterday on the last bit of the A14 (2 lanes) heading onto the M11 in a 44 tonne lorry, came up to the Bar hill junction and moved into the right hand lane to let a line of traffic join.

At the front of the cars that joined was another lorry so as we ended up matching speeds I wanted to move back to the left hand lane to let the cars behind me pass, everyone just sat there once I indicated so after a mile I let off of cruise control to slip in behind an audi and in front of a coach.

The second that I pulled behind the audi he stood on the brakes, nothing was happening in front of him so I can only guess that it was an attempt to get me to hit him. I had a bit of the grass whilst trying to stop an the coach that was behind me nearly wiped out a couple of cars trying to avoid me. The audi driver then stuck his arm out of the window and gave me the wker sign.

Things like that happen a couple of times a week, so much so that it barely raises an eyebrow anymore. The road is full of idiots, don't worry yourself about it wink

On the M11 there are quite a few drivers that stay in lane 2 regardless of what is happening in front of them. It isn't, as we could perceive, incredible perception due to the truck 1/2 a mile down the road. The problem with this is that it can provoke the some people to go rolling up L1 to prove a point about staying in L1 until you reach the truck to overtake.

I must admit I'll stay in L1 now, doing around 60 at busy times as quite often it is reasonably clear (due to most being in L2 to over take the lorries). It can be risky though as quite often L2 will slow up to less than 50 as they all accelerate and brake and get caught up in one another and I'll either get flashed for undertaking (at a rate of only a few mph) or worse, get someone nipping back to L1 without really looking.

I suppose you just have to be very aware of sitting in L2 waiting to overtake.

Huh? That makes no sense.
