This question, coming from the continent, more specifically from Belgium.

Let me explain.

I was browsing second hand Caymans to maybe get one in the future, as we all do. Problem number one is that these -and all cars- are easily 10% more expensive compared to the bargains on the PH Classifieds which is depressing enough in it's own right. However, someone here told me that your cars are indeed very cheap, but you pay an awful lot to run them. How so? I expect you'll all go eyes wide open if I tell you what it costs here in tax alone in case of the Cayman S. I hope I'm wrong:

First €1800 (£1500) tax literally for adding it to the public roads.
Then a €1200 (£1000) tax yearly, including the first year on which you already pay 1.5 grand on day one.

And no, there's no way of getting this cost down. Depends only on CO2/engine size/age.
Que some random small bills such as the number plate which now costs €30, and you're on your way with a second hand Cayman and 2600 pounds out of pocket if you'd like to drive it on the road. Of course there is the insurance as well, but from what I read here that is no cheaper and follows the same rules for quotes as you guys know.

So, what am I missing here? Are we ripped off and deprived of proper cars? An engine bigger than 2 litres is basically a crime here for which you pay your ticket trough tax. You don't want to know what +5 litres costs you.

Yes, this is a rant, and yes, you're probably not bothered, but can a remaining soul give me some hope? I just don't get where this difference comes from.

Cheers

Everything in life is relative. It all depends on wages, income tax, how your country manages omissions etc. I work all around Europe. Its just money management.
