"Police said they had spoken to the man and after evaluation of the circumstances no further action would be taken. It is believed the driver was in a confused state."

fking joke.

And more retardness - "Another motorist tweeted police saying: “Any reason why there was a car driving the wrong way up the M27 this morning coming towards me? I was in shock at around 3am”." - That's right, don't phone 999, tweet them when you get home (or at worse, behind the wheel).

The last time this happened it wasn't a pensioner, it was someone who was disturbed (friend of a friend).

I'm glad this time it ended without incident.

Cracking idea. Make sure there is enough room for the editors in the cannon as well.

Had that happen to me on the M53 a few years ago - not nice to suddenly find a car coming head on in the outside lane of a motorway.

I saw a similar thing on the ring road in Bristol one night about 10 years ago. I drove parallel with the old guy, sounding my horn and shouting out the window at him. He never looked anywhere but straight ahead.

Several vehicles swerved to avoid him, then a red 5 series hit him head on. The back of the old guy's Rover must have gone about 8 feet up. I could see almost the entire underside of the car. He died instantly. It was a horrific scene.

The BMW driver was injured, but not seriously. I had to give evidence at the inquest. His family had no idea that he could have become so confused.

Wow. Sobering thought - can only hope I never find myself in a similar situation.
