Have you ever done a driving holiday on your own?
Discussion
I've always wanted to go to the ring, always wanted to drive across europe, and after being ill all day and watching numerous bear grylls episodes, along with 'worlds most dangerous roads' at 1am on bbc (which now makes me want to buy a discovery), i want to take a 4x4 across africa now
Has anyone ever done any of this on their own? Either as part of a proper organised holiday (which i expect will be the case in 4x4/safari type stuff) or just taken off across europe in their own motor?
I know it's nice to go with someone or as a group, but are there any other fellow foreveralones out there who have done this single handed?

Yep, driven down to the south of france, along the coast to Monaco, up to Geneva and around Switzerland and back up through the black forest before heading home. Great trip, great fun.
Been up to Scotland and driven around there, another fantastic trip.
Wales a couple of times.
I like doing it, make you own choices, nobody nagging you !!

My cousin crossed the sahara in his 2CV in a convoy of other 2CVs. He started off with no friends, ended up with loads.
When I was working in Indiana I'd spent the weekends driving as far away from Indiana as I could. I'd spend the time alone in the car trying to find just one song on the radio I didn't hate. Happy times.

I've done stretches on my own, and loved it. Company is great but you meet so many more people on your own.
I had to drive back from southern France on my own when SWMBO fell and hurt herself in the Pyrenees and flew home. It wasn't serious so I dawdled and did it over a few days. I also drove from Delhi to Mumbai, leaving the guy I'd driven out with in Delhi and picking up SWMBO in Mumbai. IIRC it took 4 days and was way off the beaten track.

OP, might be worth you having a read of other peoples trips to give you a few ideas if needed.

I've done quite a bit of travelling by car on my own, Driven from the UK to Poland heaps of times but thats just boring as I only usually stop for fuel, Drove down to Crete in the Summer which was slightly more interesting as I stayed with a friend in Zurich and then another in Ancona. Ferries were properly boring but I always find when i travel on my own I make more friends as I generally talk to anyone.
Did a trip from Poland to Kiev also alone stopping on the way overnight with various random people i found through Couchsurfing (Accommodation sharing website) which makes the whole experience more interesting and is a great way of meeting the locals and seeing things you wouldn't normally go to look at and theres generally a good community of Couchsurfers in most cities (It also means you can pocket the $200 a night accommodation allowance from work)
I also drove from Athens to Poznan on my own which could have been interesting but I was just focused on getting home and it was pretty much a flat out jaunt through the Balkans worrying about not having a green card and the fact my clutch bearings were making some funky noises, also wondering why Serbia still exists as its a dump.
Also driven from Sydney to Melbourne a few times but thats just pretty boring,
I have loads of friends but my UK based friends have no sense of adventure and seem to think 300 miles is a long way, My Aussie friends, well they're mostly still at the other side of the world so the only choice is to go it alone and I've had some of the best travel experiences of my life purely because it puts you outside your comfort zone and you do find yourself talking to some pretty random and interesting people.
One of the lads from school has just done this and looking at his videos seems to have had a ball, www.c90adventures.co.uk
Europe isn't a big place so don't worry and just make sure you have enough cash/credit cards to get you out of trouble if required and go and see some random stuff,
